The United Methodist Board of Global Ministries is creating a series of mission-related experiences aimed specifically at older adults. The "Primetimers" program draws upon parts of Elderhostel, United Methodist Volunteers in Mission and other programs, adding elements of United Methodist history, doctrine and polity. The Rev. Bud Heckman, board executive, called it an ideal opportunity for active, older church members "who might not want the rigors of a regular volunteers in mission trip."

A group of Methodists in England have established a trust fund to erect a bronze statue of John Wesley at Epworth, his birthplace.

The Wesley Millennium Monument Trust was created to raise funds for the commissioning and constructing of a 6-foot-6-inch bronze statue of Methodism's founder to overlook the garden of the house where he was born and raised. The statue will sit on a "plinth" or pedestal, made from ancient stone salvaged from the tower of St. Andrew's church, where Wesley's father preached.

In the previous structure of the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM), Mr. Grund reported, 30 to 50 new missionaries were commissioned each year and 60 to 80 missionaries retired. This decline in the overall number of missionaries sparked the GBGM to revitalize the Mission Personnel Program Area. As a result, in 1999, 199 new mission personnel were commissioned.

The United Methodist Church, through its predecessor denominations, has had a mission presence in Sierra Leone for more than two centuries. Some Methodists went there as early as 1792, when a Briton, Thomas Clarkson, brought 1100 freed Blacks from Nova Scotia, Canada, to settle in the area. Thus "when George Warren, a Wesleyan Methodist missionary from Great Britain, arrived in Sierra Leone in 1811, [he] 'found the whole apparatus of Methodist organization and discipline already in progress,' with a 200- member strong Society."

At the Wesley Community Center in Dayton, Ohio, program success is not exclusively measured by how many people have been helped to train for jobs, secure employment, and move out of the welfare rolls. Rather, success is also seen in the ways that individuals are able to begin valuing their human worth and appreciating their God given potential. As the center's executive director, Mr. Robert Walker, explains, "It's a spiritual thing."

On Mother's Day, 1999, Marilyn Wakefield visited Beacon Correctional Facility for the first time to meet O. C., an inmate serving her sentence there. Marilyn had not been in a prison since she had taught English when she was much younger. Her memories included the clang made by the big metal doors when they opened to admit her and closed behind her. Beacon, a women's facility in Dutchess County, New York, housing between 200- 250 women, was a less forbidding prison.
