August 7, 1998, was the first time in modern
African history that terrorists took their
bombing campaign to sub-Saharan Africa. According
to the State Department and U.S. intelligence,
those suspected of setting up the bombs that
simultaneously destroyed the U.S. embassies in
both Kenya and Tanzania are associated with
militant exiled Saudi millionaire Osama bin
Laden.

The Reverend Denver Stone, a longtime missionary
in Southeast Asia, has been named director of
United Methodist Church (UMC) activities in
Cambodia for a one-year term.
Stone, who served 31 years in Indonesia,
Malaysia, and Singapore, will begin his
assignment in late February, said Dr. David C.
Wu, Assistant General Secretary for Connectional
Relations at the United Methodist General Board
of Global Ministries (GBGM). Dr. Wu heads the
unit's Cambodian Mission Initiatives team, which
selected Stone for the new post.

Darrick Smith, a 24-year-old youth leader from
California, presented a workshop called "How to
Defeat Social Discrimination" at a January
conference for youth in Texas. Sponsored by the
General Board of Global Ministries, the youth
conference was called "I Can Be Heard Represent!"
It was held January 15 to 19, 1999, in New
Braunfels, Texas. Youth from all over the United
States who were served by the Community
Developers program attended the conference.

Bishops of two Methodist denominations in Sierra
Leone are reported to be in hiding following the
fighting which has caused significant destruction
and danger in the capital of Freetown.
The Rev. Joseph Wagner of Indiana received word
Jan. 25 that United Methodist Bishop Joseph
Humper was safe in an undisclosed location.
Bishop J.O. Moshopeh Pratt, leader of the West
African Methodist Church, also is in hiding,
according to his daughter, Joya Pratt, who lives
in Maryland.

The latest Muslim-Christian bloodshed in
Indonesia could hinder plans to build a Methodist
hospital in Sumatra by making would-be donors shy
away from investing in the strife-ridden country,
according to the Rev. Dr. Robert Howerton of the
United Methodist General Board of Global
Ministries (GBGM).

Crisis in Sierra Leone #2

Limited phone service has been restored to
Freetown, Sierra Leone. We have received
unconfirmed reports of messages from Freetown
indicating that personnel at the church's Kissy
Eye Clinic in Freetown are safe.
However, we have not been able to make direct
contact with Bishop Joseph C. Humper (right) or
other United Methodist Church leaders in the
city.

January Tornadoes Rip Through Arkansas
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (UMNS)--Huddled under the
parsonage stairs, clutching his 5-year-old
daughter, Libby, Kevin Lyon rode out a thunderous
tornado that turned much of Arkansas upside down
Jan. 21. His wife, Donna, took cover in a closet
with sons Joshua, 6, and Stephen, 13.

United Methodists pray, raise funds for Sierra Leone
United Methodists prayed for the people of Sierra
Leone as fighting continued Jan. 13 in Freetown,
the capital of the West African country.
"We have not been able to establish contact with
Bishop (Joseph) Humper or with any of our church
members in Sierra Leone because of
telecommunications interruptions caused by the
chaos," reported the Rev. Randolph Nugent, top
executive of the United Methodist Board of Global
Ministries in New York.

General Board of Global Ministries team charged
with studying successful models of ministry that
reflect the various faces of the United Methodism
for the year 2000 already has received more than
50 nominations of churches. The team is seeking
even more nominations of churches to be
considered as models of effective ministry.

"Bread without butter, tea without sugar," the
Reverend Jafete said about the quality of life
for villagers of this poor community where he
serves as pastor in Chicuque, Mozambique. "We
have grown accustomed to a lack of any extras,"
he said with a slight edge of humor in his voice.
Taking on a serious tone, he added, "But it is
the children for whom we appeal— these little
ones so desperately in need of help." It is the
children of Teles Orphanage to whom he refers.

In Azerbaijan as elsewhere in the former Soviet
Union, decent health care is hard to come by.
Unsanitary conditions in hospitals and clinics, a
severe shortage of medicines, poor lighting in
wards, even requests for under-the-table payments
for medical treatment, have plagued the country's
already inefficient, Soviet-style health care
system.
