Pastor Mihall Cekov and Mitko Konev, director of the Miss Stone Center were honored by the city of Strumica, Macedonia, for their Meals on Wheels program. Strumica, Macedonia--The tiny United Methodist community in Strumica, Macedonia, feeds some of the city's poorest of the poor on a regular basis, and a society that is predominantly Eastern Orthodox and Muslim has taken notice.

Catherine Akale is a missionary serving in Cameroon, West Africa. At the end of May, after attending the United Methodist Women's Assembly, preaching in United Methodist churches, and speaking to church women's meetings around the United States, eight of the nine Regional Missionaries returned to the New York mission office to share stories of their work with women, children, and youth.

House, Editor of New World Outlook, The United Methodist Mission Magazine Bible Women, deaconesses, settlement houses, ministries with immigrant populations—this issue is full of mission institutions that have helped people over 100 years of mission history. Some of the images that the institutions bring to mind are almost iconic in nature: the black-clad deaconess, a single woman who lived with other women in deaconess homes, working with children, teaching, and leading Sunday school classes—the Protestant equivalent of the Catholic nun, in many ways.

UMW reflecting on Memorial Day There's a hymn in the UM Hymnal written by Jane Marshall, "What Gift Can We Bring". When I think of the words of that hymn..."Give thanks for the past, for those who had vision,.." I am reminded of our foremothers who gave birth to a missionary movement that has grown from a handful of women to a membership of nearly one million.

My trip to Thailand and Laos was a very exciting trip although I didn't think it would take a total of 17 hrs to get to Bangkok, Thailand. Boy, that was one very long plane ride, but I did have a great time.

Three months have passed since Bishop Joel Martinez made an emergency pastoral visit to Indonesia, but he has not forgotten the faces of the children in the camps for those left homeless by the Dec. 26 tsunami.

The Laos women crossed the Mekong river in small numbers - much like refugees --leaving their homeland. On the other side, they were met by Hmong women from the United States, who had once been refugees themselves. The difference between them -- the women from Laos would return to their country after a few days, putting themselves at risk to make the lives of other women and children better.

In Zimbabwe, Margaret Masawi, age 13, cooks for her two brothers. Four years ago, their parents died of AIDS.

Thirteen-year-old Margaret Masawi of Zimbabwe dreams of becoming a teacher. Young as she is, she heads a household and cares for her two younger brothers. Margaret and her brothers are three of the 980,000 children in Zimbabwe who have lost one or both parents to AIDS. Their parents died four years ago.

Some Bible Women making plans in Tonga Five hundred and fifty Bible/Gospel women from nine countries-India, Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Samoa-are now trained to share the Good News of Jesus. Bible/Gospel women are empowered to lead Bible studies with their local communities while teaching literacy skills for social change and transformation, these women have touched the lives of more than 55,000 since the initial Bible Women’s training was launched in November 2000.

The challenge was two-fold for United Methodist Women and the Women’s Division at the General Conference of The United Methodist Church. First, the Division brought several petitions around women’s and children’s issues before the legislative body with the hope of action and support from the denomination. Second, the work of United Methodist Women and the Women’s Division as a lay women’s organization with separate funds and members was at risk as opponents tried to make changes to organizational structures and funding in subtle ways.

Two local people submitted petition to the General Conference of The United Methodist Church about the work of United Methodist Women and the Women’s Division. The result was overwhelming as the petition became a resolution of the denomination on May 5 by a margin of 835 concurrence votes to 26 opposing.

This speech was given at the quadrennial meeting of United Methodist Women, which took place in each of the five jurisdiction's of the United Methodist Church.
