Roadmap to Renewal: Discovery and Rediscovery of Mission
New York, NY, April 3, 2009--Trips are quite
common in the Bible: Ancient Hebrews going to
Egypt and back; Judeans transported to Babylon;
Jesus and his band constantly moving around
Palestine; Saul on the way to Damascus. In the
Bible, people are often on the road, and in
their travels they learn about their
relationships with God.

Singing With Creation
I remember how I started to cry--on the subway
during rush hour--one winter day in the mid
1990s.
I could not stop the tears from coming to my
eyes. It was remarkable, because I started to cry
over a loss of something that I didn't even know
existed! I had just read a small article in the
daily newspaper about the phenomenon of "singing
sand," which appears in many parts of the world,
be it sand by the shores of the world's seas or
in remote deserts.

Remember Where Our Hope Truly Lies: Advent Reflection on Mark 13 First Sunday of Advent, November 30, 2008
As I am writing this, I am watching a news
broadcast about the failing economy. Worries
about banks failing, war, and environmental
collapse seem to bubble up in many of my
conversations. With such chaos around me, I have
found it difficult to know how to hope, and in
what to place my hope. Yet in Advent we are once
again to hope and wait for the coming Messiah.

Missionary Shares Story of his Palestinian Mother
The Rev. Alex Awad can trace the history of the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict through its impact
on his mother's 90 years of life. He also can
trace the influence the Christian church has had
on his mother and her family. His new book,
Palestinian Memories: The Story of a Palestinian
Mother and Her People, is a story of his
mother's Christian faith and of the Palestinian
people.

Mission Study on Israel-Palestine Is Consistent with United Methodist Policy (Revised June 2008)
Chief executives of the Women's Division and the
General Board of Global Ministries called the
2007-2008 Israel-Palestine mission study
consistent with the denomination's stand for a
just and lasting peace in that region in a
joint statement issued Feb. 19 (updated in
June, 2008). Women's Division Deputy General
Secretary Harriett Jane Olson and Global
Ministries' Interim General Secretary Bishop
Felton E. May issued the statement in response
to attacks on the study launched after a
denominational briefing for delegates to the
2008 General Conference.

United Methodists Reject Divestment from Israel
A number of petitions, including five from U.S.
annual (regional) conferences, were folded into
one petition on "divestment" that called on the
denomination's pension board and finance
agency "to review and identify companies that
profit from sales of products or services that
cause harm to Palestinians and Israelis and
begin phased selective divestment from these
companies."

Where Will Our Help Come From? Lent 2008
I live in a place that knows how to ask the
question: "Where will our help come from?"
The voice that sings the 121st song is not
foreign to Palestine or to Palestinians. Living
here, working and speaking each day with
Palestinian Christians, I hear in almost ever
word the question: "Where will our help come
from?"

Mission Study on "Israel-Palestine" Is Consistent with United Methodist Policy
A comprehensive 1996 statement on Christian-Jewish
relations by The United Methodist Church's
legislating General Conference strongly reiterated
the denomination's opposition to all forms of
anti-Semitism. Four years later, the quadrennial
General Conference, which is the only entity that
speaks for the whole church, urged United
Methodists to observe Yom HaShoah, the annual
Holocaust Memorial Day, and also addressed
Israeli-Palestinian relations in the Middle East.

Global Song: Raising Awareness of One Great Hour of Sharing in Worship
It is often through the gift of music that we
connect with people, their communities, their
needs, their gifts, and their faith. As
congregational leaders prepare for One Great
Hour of Sharing, the following suggestions from
Global Praise 3, a Global Praise resource, are
offered for use in worship to enable God's
people to pray together in the universal
