Memorial Is Dedicated at Site of Native American Massacre Led by Methodist "Fighting Parson"
The Sand Creek Massacre National Historical Site,
a memorial to 150 Native Americans massacred in
1864 by troops led by a Methodist lay preacher,
was dedicated on April 28, 2007.
The Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians
were
killed, many as they slept, by 700 Colorado
militiamen led by the Col. John Chivington, a
sometimes preacher, known as the "fighting
parson." Most of those killed were women,
children, and the elderly.
