College Students Enliven Mission Conference
Nashville, Tennessee, October 22, 2010--Beth
Kauffman, like many other United Methodist young
people today, was introduced to Christian
mission on a volunteer trip, hers to Cuba. The
experience broadened her horizon about potential
vocations, and now she is combining mission with
her youth ministry studies at Pfeiffer College
in North Carolina.

My Sketch Book Connected Me to My Brothers and Sisters in Haiti
My experience in Haiti was most incredible. Our
unique collection of team members included two
cancer survivors, a victim of corporate
downsizing, a recent corporate drop out, three
fairly 'normal' individuals and a wild and crazy
young woman. None of us (except our team leader)
had any construction experience. As it turns
out, we had the perfect mix!

Uganda Bombing
People were gathered in Kampala, Uganda, as
they were all over the world, to watch and
celebrate the final game of the World Cup, when
three bombs created mayhem. The bombings in a
suburb, a restaurant, and a rugby field killed at
least 74 and injured at least 71. Included in the
list of reported deaths was Pastor Peter Mutabazi
of the Bwaise Pentecostal Church, a small United
Methodist church that serves the poorest of the
poor in Kampala.

"Honey, Jesus Is at the Door Again"
Jesus keeps showing up at our back door
unannounced in the form of a 4'9" Mayan woman
with no front teeth. Jesus is going by the name
Isabel and has a deviously cute baby named Norma
slung over his back. You wouldn't believe how
loud Jesus knocks and how persistent he can be
with the door. The man, will simply not go away!
Let me be perfectly honest with you...Jesus is
really starting to tick me off!

My Perspective on Life in Haiti
I have been at the Methodist Guest House for
about six weeks as the Volunteer Management
Coordinator for the Haiti Response Plan. It has
been an exciting and challenging time to ramp up
a new effort to help the Eglise Methodiste
d'Haiti respond to the effects of the January
12th earthquake.

Haiti: There is an Enormous Need that Must be Met
On May 17, 2010 our UMVIM work team, led by Nick
Elliott from the Southeast Jurisdiction, arrived
in Haiti, the poorest nation in the western
hemisphere. Upon clearing immigration and
customs the results and images of the
devastating earthquake began to unfold.

in Woonsocket, a working-class Rhode Island

How Many Ways Can a Dollar Give? Fundraising Through UMCOR's Coffee Program
I didn't know anything about farming. I'd
never
grown anything before; I didn't even know how to
grow a tomato. I owe everything to ASPROCAFE.
They
saved my life. They trained me; they gave me
seeds
and loans to get started.

Single-Heartedness: First Sunday of Lent, February 21, 2010
Absolute single-hearted service…how does one
do that? What would that look like? Some saintly
person unengaged with this world's temptations
and relationships that snarl much of God's
creation into an unrecognizable mess? What does
single-hearted service mean to me? How do I not
become distracted from my intentions?

Christmas Is Whose Birthday?
A few years ago, Pastor Mike Slaughter of the
Ginghamsburg United Methodist Church in Tipp
City, Ohio, challenged the congregation to
remember in their gift-making that Christmas
celebrates Jesus' birthday. "Christmas in Not
Your Birthday!" became a slogan in one of the
most remarkable examples of Christian compassion
and care in the contemporary church.

Mission: Cameroon
New York, NY, September 17, 2009--The United
Methodist Church in Cameroon, West Africa, has a
bright future, but just how bright depends upon
the strength of the network of mission
partnerships required to sustain a young
Christian community. This is especially true in
a multilingual country with a great variety of
religious options.
