Addiction and Recovery: A Process Towards Sanctification
As I stood before the bishop of the Virginia
Conference of The United Methodist Church at my
ordination as an Elder, I heard him ask: "Do you
expect to go on to perfection in this life?"
Little did I know that this question would
emerge as a central motif for my pastoral
practice with those suffering from addictions
and working through recovery in medical and
mental health settings.

God's Mission: Incarnation, Not Intervention
The tragic consequences of the mammoth
earthquake that struck the nation of Haiti this
year has brought forth, once again, those

Recovering the African American Heritage of The United Methodist Church
Persons of African descent were numerous and
visible in American Methodism when the church
was formally established 225 years ago. But
these facts were often glossed over in ensuing
years, especially in the early 19th century as
slavery became a major issue of conflict in
politics and religion.

American Methodist Anniversary: From Baltimore into the Life Blood of a Nation
They rode from Baltimore in the first few
days of 1785, around 60 mostly young preachers
infused with missionary zeal and moving
confidently into the lifeblood of a new nation.
Over the previous nine days, they had organized
the first national Protestant denomination in
what was becoming--but was not quite yet--the
United States of America.
