arrow icon. More than a Thousand Sing: French and English Cameroonian Hymnbook Released 
The choir at the United Methodist Church in Lebamzip, Cameroon.

This month, the more than 1,000 United Methodists of the Cameroon mission have one more reason to celebrate, praise, and sing--the release of the hymnbook, O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing/Mille Voix Pour Chanter Tes Louanges. This useful and creative hymnal was made, printed, and published by and for Cameroonian United Methodist worshipers. The hymnal contains hundreds of hymns, some from the African and Wesleyan traditions, some in French and English.

A man grieves in the shadow of the ruined Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption as Haitians held a January 23 funeral mass for the Roman Catholic archbishop and vicar general of Port-au-Prince, both of whom were killed in the country's earthquake.

The tragic consequences of the mammoth earthquake that struck the nation of Haiti this year has brought forth, once again, those purported theologians who asserted God's divine judgment on that impoverished nation's people for some kind of un-Christian activity.

Richard Allen (1760-1831) was a minister and founder of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in 1816. Frontispiece of 'History of the African Methodist Episcopal Church' (1891)

Persons of African descent were numerous and visible in American Methodism when the church was formally established 225 years ago. But these facts were often glossed over in ensuing years, especially in the early 19th century as slavery became a major issue of conflict in politics and religion.

This year, the Protestant Christian church marks the 100th anniversary of an extraordinary conference that took place in Edinburgh, Scotland, from June 14 to 23, 1910. "The World Missionary Conference to Consider Missionary Problems in Relation to the Non-Christian World," its full title, was quickly and thankfully shortened to "The World Missionary Conference."

They rode from Baltimore in the first few days of 1785, around 60 mostly young preachers infused with missionary zeal and moving confidently into the lifeblood of a new nation. Over the previous nine days, they had organized the first national Protestant denomination in what was becoming--but was not quite yet--the United States of America.

Despite devastation from civil war on the campus of the Gbarnga School of Theology in Monrovia, Liberia, the faculty immediately added counseling to its class offerings after peace was restored.
