Oregon Youth Decide to B1
Tell eight youth and three adult volunteers
that they will skip food for 24 hours and you
can imagine the responses! But once these
members of Madras United Methodist Church in
Madras, Oregon put their minds to it, there was
very little complaining. The B1 campaign raises
awareness of issues of poverty locally and
globally.

Hallelujah Moment from Chile: Holes Are Filled
Harrell, now a missionary, came to realize
that many persons who want to see only beauty
and eat only delicacies have "holes" within that
go unfilled. She says, "During my years in
Chile, I have witnessed a filling of the 'hole'
among many members of Volunteers in Mission
(VIM) teams or individuals who have ventured to
live and work with those living in poverty."

Hallelujah Moment from Chile: Terremoto!
We lost power. Then I heard it—that rumbling
that comes as the earth begins to split and
move…"terremoto," as we say in Spanish. People
were running, moms rushing to a nearby school to
retrieve their children--fear driving them on.

Hallelujah Moment From Chile Rising from Tragedy
Living in Iquique, Chile, is pretty much like
living anywhere else in the world. There are
shopping malls, theaters, restaurants, schools,
and vehicles of every size and shape, new and
old. In the morning before assuming my work
duties for the day, I join the joggers running
along the beach.

UMCOR Hotline, June 21, 2005
Civil unrest in Haiti has led United Methodist
Volunteers in Mission to cancel all summer mission
trips to Haiti. Heavy spring rains in the Highwood
Mountains of north-central Montana destroyed
bridges in the area. Northern Chile was rocked by
a powerful earthquake last week. Food shortages
from the lack of rain, locust infestations, and a
breakdown of civil infrastructures are causing
famines in southern, western, and eastern African
nations.

In our work with the children in Sunday School
...In our work with the children in Sunday
School, Kid's Club and the girl's group we see
the results of very difficult family situations
that have been described to us. Many children
are
being raised by single mothers or by
grandparents
so many in fact that while schools and churches
give great attention to Mother's Day, they
frequently skip Father's Day as it causes too
much negative impact.
