Toward Sustainable Development in Cambodia
Pastor Muy Socheat is a man with multiple
talents. In Sisophon, Cambodia, he leads O Ambel
Methodist mission church, a lively congregation.
He earns income by raising pigs and using his
carpentry skills, which are elegantly displayed
on the wooden doors of his church-house-carpenter
shop in the form of four hand-carved Scripture
verses. He also writes Christian music.

Methodism In Cambodia Today
Christian faith must bear fruit that heals hearts
and spirits, re-builds trust and relationships,
and restores dignity. During my recent assignment
in Cambodia, a country badly damaged by the
legacy of the Pol Pot Regime (1975-1979), I had
the opportunity to facilitate a visioning
workshop for the Methodist Mission in Cambodia
(MMC).

Hallelujah Moment from Cambodia: "By the Khmer People for the Khmer People"
In October 2006, the children's resource design
team of the Methodist Mission in Cambodia
introduced the first book of the newly revised
Sunday School Curriculum to 150 local
congregations, Bible College students, and
district superintendents. In addition, basic
teaching supplies, like pencils, notebooks, and
scissors, were also distributed. This curriculum
was translated, contextualized, and printed in
Cambodia. Sunday School teachers trained in ways
that were appropriate for the culture.

Missionary Minute: First Sunday in Lent March 5, 2006
Growing up in Kenya, we went to schools and were
cared for in hospitals built by missionaries.
Today— serving as missionaries in Phnom Penh,
Cambodia—we feel privileged and honored to share
with people who have some of the same needs we
had 30 years ago!

Missionary Minute: Fourth Sunday After the Epiphany January 29, 2006
Before I met Jesus, my life was filled with
worry
and sadness. I had little hope. You see, I was
one of the educated persons targeted by the
Khmer
Rouge and imprisoned during the era of the
Cambodian Killing Fields. During this time, an
estimated 2 million Cambodians—nearly one-third
of the entire population—died by starvation,
torture or execution.

Lighting the Way for Children
An extraordinary coincidence became apparent as
we gathered the stories for this issue of New
World Outlook. As the articles arrived, I
noticed the names of the ministries in many of
these articles contained the
words "light," "day," or "sunrise." ... Yet one
over-riding theme came through: ministries that
reach homeless and orphaned children are
ministries of light. They reach into lives that
exist in very dark places and open the curtains.

O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing
The church at Talom has been the first to
complete the health survey of families in their
congregation and community. Sok – you remember,
with his piglet that got the bone stuck in her
throat - and Keo, a translator/teacher from our
Phnom Penh office who has many talents, came to
work with us at this first health meeting at
Talom. They did a first rate job! The women
recalled the vision that they had articulated
last year:

sing hymns under homes built on stilts, or read
Bibles in newly completed churches. These are
the new Christians of Cambodia — a growing
movement, often led by teenagers and children,
many of whom are newly literate.

Responsively Yours: Rules of War, Prayers for Peace Response Magazine July-August issue
Torture is wrong. In 1982 the late John Paul II said, “The memory of
Jesus stripped naked, beaten, derided, nailed to the cross” should
make all Christians “reject, spontaneously and absolutely, any
recourse to such means which nothing on earth can justify and
which destroy the dignity of both the tortured and the torturer.”
