UMCOR Hotline, April 12, 2005
In New Jersey, volunteers are cleaning up with
400 UMCOR flood buckets sent from Mission Central
in Pennsylvania. UMCOR is part of an ecumenical
coalition that rushed emergency aid to the island
of Nias in the Indian Ocean. UMCOR is putting out
an urgent call for health kits. UMCOR is at work
in Haiti, where nearly 30,000 have remained
homeless since Hurricane Jeanne's thrashing, and
Grenada, where Hurricane Ivan's winds destroyed
90 percent of buildings and virtually all its
agriculture.

Thousands of volunteers are needed to do help
rebuild homes in the Southeast. A grant from
UMCOR will assist with repairs of a water
drilling rig and semi-truck on the island of La
Gonave, Haiti. Deep within the rural landscape of
Zimbabwe, Nyadire United Methodist Hospital staff
serve 150,000 people a year. Afghanistan's
harshest winter in 15 years is turning into its
worst spring.

Dominican Cocoa Farmers Recover with United Methodist Help
When Hurricane Jeanne struck the Dominican
Republic last September, the resulting damage
affected some 1,600 cocoa farmers. Those farmers –
or producers, are part of the United Methodist
Committee on Relief's coffee project. The project
encourages people to buy "fair trade" items such
as coffee, tea, cocoa and chocolate.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief will
assist with rehabilitation of rural schools near
Basrah, Iraq. Another 4,500 UMCOR school kits are
on their way to Grenadan children. An UMCOR staff
member leaves this week to provide short-term
logistics aid to the Methodist Church of Sri
Lanka, and soon another UMCOR aid worker will go
to Indonesia on a similar assignment.

Staying the Course in "Mega-Disaster" Rehabilitation
How well do relief operations follow through with
rehabilitation after "mega-disasters" such as the
earthquake and tsunamis that swept the Indian
Ocean on December 26? "In big, complex recoveries
from mega-disasters, UMCOR plans to be in place
for a long time-- for years," said the Rev.
Kristin Sachen of the United Methodist Committee
on Relief (UMCOR).

United Methodists have pulled out the stops with
overwhelmingly generous donations to UMCOR's
urgent appeal to assist tens of thousands of
earthquake and tsunami survivors in South and
Southeast Asia. The Souper Bowl of Caring, a
youth-led international event that happens the
first weekend in February. Twenty families in
Santa Fe, a small fishing town at the west edge
of Havana, Cuba, have new housing and another 100
received upgraded water service as an UMCOR
project concluded in early December 2004.

Historical Encounter of Caribbean Methodist Leaders for Mission, Culture and Life Meets at Boca Chica, Dominican Republic
The initial gathering of the Caribbean Methodist
Leadership Forum in 2004 brought together the
Major Antilles Methodist Leaders in Boca Chica,
Dominican Republic, December 14-16.
Participants were the heads of churches of the
Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico
and the Conexional President of the Methodist
Church of the Caribbean and the Americas (MCCA)
based in St. John, Antigua.

soldiers continues. Grants from UMCOR to annual

as a free DVD in time to observe World AIDS Day

UMCOR Recommends Quick Impact Support for Grenada, Haiti
A team of United Methodist relief specialists just
back from Haiti and Grenada is recommending new
quick impact initiatives to help both island
nations recover from devastating hurricanes in
recent weeks. Urgent needs in Haiti include a
speed-up of food distribution and reconstruction
of homes. Grenada needs help restoring its nutmeg
industry and in rebuilding community centers.

With funding from from UMCOR, the Cuban Council
of Churches is implementing recovery efforts in
Cuba. UMCOR is one of several ecumenical
partners clearing debris, rehabbing schools, and
providing fresh water in Haiti. Medicine Boxes
are needed now in Azerbaijan, flood buckets in
the United
States, and health and school kits in Liberia.

management initiatives in mid-Florida while UMCOR
volunteers and workers clean up after the fourth
major storm in six weeks. UMCOR has provided
grants to other annual conferences where
hurricanes spawned tornadoes and drenched
saturated soils. UMCOR international disaster
staff members anticipate conducting assessments in
Haiti. UMCOR will also assess the scope of
disaster in Grenada.

UMCOR Hotline Special Hurricanes Update, September 23, 2004
UMCOR is responding to the floods and mudlides
emergency that has killed over 1000 people in
Haiti. In addition UMCOR has issued an urgent
call for advocacy of temporary protected status
for Haitian immigrants. In the Alabama-West
Florida Annual Conference, workers have begun the
long cleanup. Farmworkers, the elderly, and
immigrants from Haiti have received aid.

In Haiti UMCOR Responds to Jeanne's Lethal Aftermath
More than 700 people have died in Haiti from
flooding and mudslides, the lethal aftermath of
Tropical Storm Jeanne. Thousands more sought high
ground on the roofs of their houses as nine-foot
floodwaters swept through impoverished urban
centers. Rescue workers expect to uncover more
dead as waters recede.
