North Texas Donates $500,000 to Africa University

The United Methodist North Texas Annual
(regional) Conference has donated $500,000 to
build a new student health center at Africa
University, with plans to contribute another
$500,000 to the Zimbabwe school.

Retired Mission Leader John Johannaber Dies at 86
New York, NY, June 25, 2009--The Rev. Dr.
John W. Johannaber, who once headed the mission
personnel unit of the United Methodist General
Board of Global Ministries, died at his home in
Oxford, Georgia, on June 9, 2009. He was 86
years old.

Africa University Researchers Address Health Issues
MUTARE, Zimbabwe (UMNS)--When cholera struck
Harare, Zimbabwe, during the past year, one of
the worst-affected areas was the high-density
suburb of Budiriro. Donwell Dube, 39, a graduate
student at United Methodist-related Africa
University, wanted to study how effective
humanitarian aid was in the response to the
cholera outbreak and chose Budiriro as a case
study.

Global Praise Scholarship’s First Scholar: An Interview with Caleb Mauwa

newly named Global Praise Scholarship was
established under the General Board of Global
Ministries Leadership Development program. This
scholarship has been designated to support the
university-level studies of a promising young
international student of music. The first
recipient of the Global Praise Scholarship is
Caleb Mauwa of Zimbabwe.

Willie Marare: Thankful to God, Despite Hardships
The Rev. Willie Babopotongerenyi Marare has
suffered imprisonment, attacks on his home and
the deaths of his two sons.
The setback that finally made him stop preaching
was the loss of his eyesight in 2001.

Zimbabwe's Economy Adds to Retirees' Misery
Selling little yellow balls of "Cockroach Kill"
used to help the Rev. Kenneth Shamu put food on
the table.
Now even income from that small business is gone
because the soaring inflation rate in Zimbabwe
has made it impossible to buy the ingredients -
sugar, eggs and Borax.

Tabitha Katsande: 'It Was Difficult to Save Anything'
Every Sunday morning, Tabitha Katsande dons a
bright yellow choir robe and robustly lifts her
voice in praise to the Lord.
Revelation United Methodist Church would not be
the same without her. In addition to her choir
duties, she is chairperson of evangelism, serves
as conference and district women's society
adviser, and works with the women's group in the
church.

United Methodist Church Appoints Twenty-Two New Missionaries
Twenty-two new United Methodist missionaries
were
commissioned on March 11 to serve in churches,
hospitals, and community centers in ten
countries
and five states of the United States.
The new missionaries are lawyers, doctors,
pastors, and agriculturalists. They come from
places as diverse as Brazil, the Philippines,
Mexico, Zimbabwe, Missouri, and Michigan. They
fall into several categories of mission service
and form the largest group of United Methodist
missionaries commissioned at the same time in
the
last four years.
