Serbia & Montenegro/Macedonia
Methodism came to Yugoslavia by way of a monthly
news magazine published in German by German-
speaking Methodists in the United States.
Because of a magazine article, a group in Backa
(Vojvodina) discovered that there was a
Methodist congregation in Vienna, Austria. They
were drawn to the denomination because of a
common interest in temperance. They invited the
Vienna pastor to Backa in 1897, and thus the
church was born, despite the fact that the new
religion was soon persecuted and its newly
appointed pastor imprisoned.
