In 2007, Bishop Sudarshana Devadhar of the Greater New Jersey Annual Conference contacted The Advance office looking for a new way to connect the youth of Greater New Jersey Annual Conference to The Advance, the denomination's giving channel dedicated to mission. Two years later, the response to the bishop's request can be symbolized by a letter and number, "B1."

Peter, like so many of us, was trying to remain cautiously faithful. He wanted to protect Christ, he did not want him to be humiliated and killed. Often we want to stop moving forward and come up with a safe plan, risk the least, and be happy with the results.

arrow icon. The Wesleys: A Theology of Hymns
Ivorian choir members offer songs of praise in a four-hour worship service during the 2007 Côte d'Ivoire Annual Conference at the Palais de Sports in Abidjan. In the 21st century, the praise of our great Redeemer is realized in a multitude of tongues throughout the world. It is common knowledge that, unlike John Calvin, the Wesley brothers, John and Charles, did not leave behind a crystallized systematic theological understanding of their faith. On the contrary, the essence of Wesleyan theology is found in a rather unusual place--namely the thousands upon thousands of hymns that both brothers created during their lifetimes.

The 23-member Hope for Africa Children's Choir from Uganda perform at the 2008 General Conference in Fort Worth, Texas. Many are orphans of civil war violence or AIDS. To be Christian is to be global. Deeply incarnate in every soil where it is planted, the gospel of Jesus Christ knows of no boundaries. Its song sprouts strong and travels unto the very ends of the earth, declaring the marvels of God's salvation. This worldwide, generous, ample vision of the gospel runs deep inside the faith-singing Methodist DNA.

If you've ever wondered if Methodism's founder, John Wesley, had a sense of humor, turn to page vii in The United Methodist Hymnal (1989 version), and read Wesley's "Directions for Singing." There he is in all his warmth, wit, and dry British humor encouraging Methodists, then and now, to sing to the glory of God.

Members of the Evangelical Methodist Church in Bolivia play traditional instruments. In 1996, I attended worship in a modest-sized congregation in the hills outside T'ainan, Taiwan. As the service began, a lay leader in the congregation led a series of songs. His strong voice and inviting manner engaged me immediately. This was my first visit to Taiwan and I knew only a few words of Taiwanese. Despite the language barrier, I was able to participate in all of the songs during the gathering time.

Rev. Cathy Whitlatch is presently serving as the Missionary Interpreter in Residence for the Western Jurisdiction. Previously she has served as a missionary in Argentina, a missionary with the National Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministries, and as a pastor in the Iowa Annual Conference. In Mark's account of Jesus' baptism, Jesus "saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.'" God poured God's self through the torn heavens--identifying Jesus as God's own.

arrow icon. Singing With Creation
The Spiritual Image Choir of South Hayward United Methodist Church in California sings during a morning worship at the 2008 United Methodist General Conference in Fort Worth, Texas. I remember how I started to cry--on the subway during rush hour--one winter day in the mid 1990s. I could not stop the tears from coming to my eyes. It was remarkable, because I started to cry over a loss of something that I didn't even know existed! I had just read a small article in the daily newspaper about the phenomenon of "singing sand," which appears in many parts of the world, be it sand by the shores of the world's seas or in remote deserts.

A Volunteer-in-Mission team from Faith United Methodist Church in Dickinson, Texas, helping to clean up after Hurrican Katrina. Raising $22,000 for mission in a single event; becoming a second home for refugees; opening a food pantry that keeps 8,000 people in a community from going hungry until their paychecks arrive each month; building and staffing a community center; caring for children with after- school programs, summer camps, school supplies, and scholarships; sending emergency relief teams to disaster sites: the accomplishments of small- membership churches across the connection are far too many to name. Yes, small churches can do mission!

Welcome to 2009, a new year, a new quadrennium, and a new look for New World Outlook! As I prepared this issue for press, I realized that 2009 marks New World Outlook's 99th volume—that's 99 years of uninterrupted publication. We hope to continue to make improvements to the print publication over the course of this year and to update New World Outlook's online edition as well.
