Report of the Deputy General Secretary to the Women's Division:
In Isaiah 43: 19, we are told, “I am about to do a
new thing: now it springs forth, do you not
perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.” There is no doubt that
God is doing a new thing in the Women’s Division
and United Methodist Women. The Holy Spirit has
brought many new surprises, and frankly, the
whirlwind of excitement, activity and challenge
has been at times breathtaking, which is another
way of saying both exhilarating and challenging...

A life dedicated to Shining for Racial Justice
As we prepare for the UMW Assembly in a few
weeks, we are considering what it means
to “Shine.” I am reminded of the song, “They
will know we are Christians by our love." Paul
describes this love eloquently in 1 Corinthians,
but “shining” and showing God’s love in the
world, a love that “rejoices with the truth,” is
not always an easy or safe road to take, even
though it brings great rewards.

Love and Faith Make for Healing and Praise
I was born into a Methodist family and grew up
listening to our preachers telling us that we
should always praise the Lord for all God did
for us. The summer I was 14 years old our family
traveled to Kansas from south Texas to visit my
mother’s brother and family.

Praise God! God is Good!
When I think of glorifying God, I can’t help but
think of singing.
I love to hear the birds early in the morning as
they welcome a new day. It doesn’t matter if it
is cloudy or chilly, they sing their early
morning songs of joy.

Love the One Next to Us, Peace Flourishes
In the children’s story, The Three Questions,
based on a novel by Leo Tolstoy, a young boy
contemplates how to be a good person.[1] He
decides he could be “good” if he answers three
questions. With his animal friends, in an
allegorical manner, the boy searches and finds
the answers.

USA PATRIOT Act Update
On Friday March 3, 2006 the U.S. Senate renewed
the USA Patriot
Act by a vote of 89-10. The Senate’s renewal
(reauthorization)
package makes 14 of 16 temporary provisions
permanent and
sets four-year expirations on the others. After
the Senate
renewed the USA Patriot Act the bill was sent to
the U.S. House
of Representatives for a vote. On Tuesday March
7, 2006 the
House voted 280-138 to approve the Senate-passed
reauthorization. President Bush is expected to
sign the
reauthorization package before the 2001 law
expires on March
10, 2006.

Good Morning, God!
Assembly Meditation: "Rise, Shine, Glorify God!"
I am reminded of the elderly gentleman who, when he awakened
each morning, prayed, "Good morning God, what are you up to
today? I want to be a part of it."
United Methodist Women have a tremendous opportunity to
stand up, speak up, and reach out to those who cannot speak
for themselves.

Women and Media Truth or Lies
Media advocacy is an important way women can make
contributions to ensuring a just society. All media (including media
tools such as the internet), and particularly broadcast media, have
an obligation to “fulfill its obligation to act in public interest.”

Proposed Federal Budget for FY 2007
On Monday February 6, 2006 President George Bush presented
his $2.77 trillion fiscal year (FY) 2007 budget to Congress. This
proposal came only days after Congress passed a budget
reconciliation bill for FY 2006, in which $40 billion will be cut
from entitlement programs, programs that are governed by
legislation in a way that legally obligates the federal government
to make specific payments to qualified recipients, over five years
which include programs such as Medicaid, welfare, child support
and student lending.
