Saving Lives in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Disheveled children of every age and size
crowded around our vehicle as it ground to a
stop in front of the United Methodist Mpasa
Reference Health Center in the Democratic
Republic of the Congo. It was in this sprawling
suburb of Kinshasa, DR Congo, that I was to
assess health facilities for the Central Congo
Conference. Dr. Rebecca Yohadi, the conference's
Chief Medical Officer, told me that the Mpasa
suburb sprang up in 1998 near a military
installation as a camp for displaced persons and
refugees.

Substance Abuse and Related Violence: Recognizing the Need for a Holistic Response
Incidents of violence and substance abuse
occur on a daily basis. There is a correlation
between alcohol and violence, although there is
not a direct cause and effect. Substance abuse
does not cause violence, and substance abusers
do not necessarily commit violent acts. By the
same token, substance abuse treatment cannot
cure violence.

Is Religion a Source of Violence? A Reflection in the Aftermath of Violence in Mumbai, India
The recent tragedy in Mumbai is personal to me. I
started out my pastoral ministry in South Mumbai,
the part of the city that was under siege. I was
appointed to serve as the senior pastor of the
Bowen Memorial Methodist Church, located right
behind the Taj Hotel. My wife, Glory, and I have
eaten in Leopold Restaurant, another site of
massacre.

Family Testimony: SPSARV Fifth Witness
My name is Carolyn, and I am an alcoholic. My
sobriety date is March 28, 1985. I am 64 years
old and I am still quite active in Alcoholics
Anonymous as well as Al-Anon.* In fact, my Al-
Anon anniversary is April 1, 1986. It is my firm
belief that if it were not for Al-Anon, I would
not have been able to stay sober. My membership
in Al-Anon has been that crucial in my recovery.
Let me tell you briefly why this is so.

Family Response: Fifth Article in a Series Marking National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month
Families and friends who love someone addicted
to alcohol or other drugs have experienced
emotional pain that only another who has been in
the same place can understand. One who has never
experienced loving and being loved by an addict
might say, "Why don't you just leave them?" But
would this be a valid solution if the afflicted
person had cancer or diabetes? No, of course
not.
