Urban Ministry Survey Cites Need for Training, Support
United Methodists are committed to urban ministry
but want more training on how to provide that
ministry.
They also want more networking opportunities so
that those ministering to urban neighborhoods can
learn from and support one another.
Such were key findings of a denominational survey
conducted during the winter, with 808 local
churches and 20 United Methodist bishops
responding.

Pollination
“Country Voices, Urban Voices” is New World
Outlook’s tribute to several networks that bring
people together to consider God’s purpose for
their lives. Whether in the country or in the
city, ministry conducted in isolation can stifle
creativity, dampen the spirit, and use up
resources quickly. Meeting with other people who
share the love of Christ and seek to do God’s
will in the world can energize church leaders and
give them new ideas, new resources, and support
for their mission ministry within their
communities.

Holy Boldness Urban Academy, St. Louis Gateway Central District
The Gateway Central District of the Missouri
Conference includes congregations in the city and
the first ring of suburbs surrounding the urban
core of the St. Louis metropolitan area. These
congregations are in various stages of
transition, with growing and declining
neighborhoods, older buildings that are too small
or too large, landlocked conditions, little or no
parking, members who often drive in for worship,
and communities in the midst of decline and
renewal.

St. Louis Churches Put Strong Emphasis on Urban Ministry
Tall-steepled Centenary United Methodist Church,
a regal landmark in downtown St. Louis, MO,
typically had about 20 people in worship when the
Rev. Conway Briscoe arrived as pastor in July
2004. That was a far cry from its glory days as
the city’s “Cathedral of Methodism,” housing
3,500 in worship in the early 1900s, vibrant
outreach ministries and offices of the annual
(regional) conference and area bishop.
