Protesters ask for the release of Dr. Montes and 42 other medical caregivers who were arrested while attending a Community Medicine Development Foundation (COMMED) training seminar. As young men, Dr. Alexis Montes and the Rev. Leo Soriano worked together to provide health care in rural areas of the Philippines. Soriano would go on to become a United Methodist bishop. Montes continued his work in community- based health care up until Feb. 6, when he and 42 other health workers were arrested by the government on charges of being communist insurgents.

A woman sells items in front of her makeshift shelter in a camp for homeless families set up on a golf course in Port-au-Prince. For 16 years, staff of the Lambi Fund have helped rural communities in Haiti work toward self-sufficiency. Since the Jan. 12 earthquake, the humanitarian organization has witnessed the effects of reverse migration on those communities as more than a half-million people have streamed out of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's heavily damaged capital. The 80-year-old mother of Lambi staff member Pierre St. Cyr, for example, has taken in 39 earthquake survivors.

Two little girls who wanted to come to church have helped Jennifer Battiest come to terms with her anger over how the church has treated Native Americans. The daughter of two United Methodist pastors – Samuel, a Choctaw from Oklahoma, and Margaret, a Choctaw from Mississippi – Battiest said she has long had conflicted feelings about her Christian connections, even as she has embraced a calling from God.

A new theological program based in Lima, Peru, will provide pastoral training for Methodists in the Andean region of Latin America. The program, which will include a seminary and a Center for Wesley Studies, was conceived by the Wesley Heritage Foundation of North Carolina and the Methodist Church of Peru, with support from The United Methodist Church. Classes are expected to begin in August or September of 2009, according to the Rev. Mark Wethington, the foundation’s president.

The top court of The United Methodist Church has ruled that the denomination's legislative body would need to enact enabling legislation in 2012 to change the church's structure in the United States. The Judicial Council, in its first meeting since the election of five new members last spring, also remanded two cases on key issues—church membership and same-gender marriages—back to their respective conferences, citing an absence of official documentation needed to decide the cases.

A work team rebuilds a hurricane-damaged home in the Cuban province of Pinar del Rio. The United Methodist Committee on Relief has made some progress toward obtaining the U.S. Treasury Department licenses required to allow the denomination to assist hurricane survivors in Cuba, according to the Rev. Sam Dixon, head of UMCOR. Dixon reported on the progress Oct. 15 to the relief agency's board of directors, meeting in Stamford, Conn. The United Methodist Committee on Relief has made some progress toward obtaining the U.S. Treasury Department licenses required to allow the denomination to assist hurricane survivors in Cuba.
