Sisters and brothers, in those days a decree went out… from the government of Angela Merkel, the new chancellor in the Federal Republic of Germany. All the refugees & asylum seekers in the country had to be distributed among the regions of the whole republic according to their nationalities.

arrow icon. Advent Is Full of People Doing the Unusual Fourth Sunday of Advent, December 21, 2008
Luke 1 and 2 are all full of people doing the absolutely unusual. It is unusual for kings to visit poor folk's babies in a stable. It is unusual for kings to bring presents, kneel down to, and worship some unknown, homeless couple's child. And it is unusual for them to show solidarity with a tiny newborn human being rather than with their colleague king--Herod. That is what the evangelist Matthew reports us.

arrow icon. Thanksgiving: An Attitude of Gratitude
It's easy to be grateful for sugar and spice and all things nice. Who among us doesn't feel appreciative and appreciated when fortune is smiling down upon us? This seems like a limited sort of gratitude, too dependent on circumstance and perception. How much more profound to come to a sense of appreciation for all Life, even the slugs and snails and puppy dog tails.

During a much needed rainy day, Scott Williams installed one of the two signs he designed and built to direct visitors and volunteers to Henderson Settlement. During a regular week, Scott Williams works for the Springfield Park District. Often he makes and maintains signs for parks in the central Illinois community. So it only made sense that on his recent mission trip to Henderson Settlement in Frakes, KY, he used his “regular talents” to make a contribution to the Red Bird Missionary Conference mission.

arrow icon. Advent Calendar 2003
Thanks again to Rev. Tom Mousin and Rev. Merry Watters, United Methodist pastors serving churches in the Troy conference, for the Advent calendar. They have worked together to create a calendar each Advent season for the last 12 years.
Pastor Watters colors the calendars and mails them to friends and family instead of sending more traditional Christmas cards. What better gift could one give than sharing the true meaning and spirit of the holiday season?

"Be ye doers of the word and not hearers only." James 1:22. North Carolina has opportunities to hammer, pray, paint, cook, lift, install drywall, and help out in many important ways, to be a doer for people in need. We were from Vermont and Northeastern New York, members of a Troy Conference team of 20, who have been doing just that.

Asbury United Methodist Church from Maitland, Florida sent a mission team to Jayaque, El Salvador from May 31 to June 7, 2003. Our mission was to build homes for victims of the 2001 earthquakes, offer Vacation Bible School for the local children, and to build relationships with the people of El Salvador. This was a return trip for our church as we sent a team to Jayaque in 2002. We were very excited to return and once again serve in Jayaque.
