United Methodist and British Methodists Leaders Strengthen Global Mission Relationships
February 9, 2012, New York, NY--For the second
year in a row, top leaders from the General Board
of Global Ministries met with representatives of
the Methodist Church of Great Britain to continue
conversations with a goal of being more effective
partners in mission. The two-day meeting took
place in London at the British Methodist
headquarters. The United Methodist group was led
by Thomas Kemper, general secretary, who said it
had been a useful meeting and "showed the growing
collaboration between the UMC and British Church
in its international mission work."

150 Years of the Methodist Recorder
When the first edition of the weekly
Methodist Recorder and General Christian
Chronicle appeared in 1861, Queen Victoria was
on the British throne, railway mania was in full
swing, Charles Dickens was writing Great
Expectations, and Abraham Lincoln had just been
elected President of the United States.

Methodist Diversity in Europe on the Rise

Observations on Edinburgh 2010
United Methodist Bishop Heinrich Bolleter,
Geneva Secretary of the World Methodist Council,
offers his observations on Edinburgh 2010, the
ecumenical world mission conference held in
Edinburgh, Scotland, on June 2-6. The event
marked the one hundredth anniversary of a
landmark missionary conference in 1910. Bishop
Bolleter, who is retired from the Southern and
Century Europe Central Conference, represented
the World Methodist Council on a committee
of "stakeholders" that assisted in planning the
2010 conference, which had the theme "Witnessing
to Christ Today."

Common Call: The Church as a Sign and Symbol of the Reign of God

The World Missionary Conference at Edinburgh, 1910
This year, the Protestant Christian church
marks the 100th anniversary of an extraordinary
conference that took place in Edinburgh,
Scotland, from June 14 to 23, 1910. "The World
Missionary Conference to Consider Missionary
Problems in Relation to the Non-Christian
World," its full title, was quickly and
thankfully shortened to "The World Missionary
Conference."

American Methodist Anniversary: From Baltimore into the Life Blood of a Nation
They rode from Baltimore in the first few
days of 1785, around 60 mostly young preachers
infused with missionary zeal and moving
confidently into the lifeblood of a new nation.
Over the previous nine days, they had organized
the first national Protestant denomination in
what was becoming--but was not quite yet--the
United States of America.

Church Hymn-singing Has Evolved over Centuries
When Charles Wesley began penning his more than
7,000 hymns back in the 18th century, hymn-
singing was not part of the worship life of
Anglican congregations. In fact, until 1821, hymn-
singing was illegal in the Church of England.
