A "New" Mission Initiative Grows Up
New York, NY, April 13, 2011--A little more
than 20 years ago United Methodist people took a
bold step in reigniting in Russia mission work
interrupted three-quarters of a century earlier
by
the communist revolution. It became the
conceptual, if not the structural, model for what
are today more than a dozen widely dispersed "new
mission initiatives" of the denomination.

Children Give to and for Children Through the Children's Fund for Christian Mission
These are just some of the ways that
teachers, parents, pastors, and kids in United
Methodist churches can join in the 2010
Children's Fund for Christian Mission. This
annual fund offers creative ways to capture and
build on children's natural enthusiasm for
learning about and caring for children in the
world through mission.

Rethink Mission: Trends in Missionary Service
Recent trends in missionary service reflect a
greater awareness and respect for cultural
context, simple living, communication, and
diversity. These trends may seem forward-looking,
yet the changing tides of missionary service refer
back to the past and to the life of Jesus Christ.

Mission Initiatives: Starting New Churches Outside the US
One hundred six new congregations were started
outside the United States in 2009 through a
series of United Methodist Mission Initiatives
sponsored by the General Board of Global
Ministries. The 13 initiatives--ranging from
Mongolia to Honduras--are what Thomas Kemper,
the mission agency's new chief executive,
calls "front-line efforts" in pursuit of the
denomination's goal of "making disciples of
Jesus Christ for the transformation of the
world."

Hallelujah Moment From Ukraine: Easter in Ukraine
Easter is called “Paska” in Ukraine, the term
also used for the Jewish Passover. Jesus went to
the cross during Passover, an observance that
recalls the blood of the lambs that protected the
Israelites as the angel of death "passed-over"
their houses in Egypt. The Passover prepared the
way for the exodus in the time of Moses. We
Christians also use the image of the slain lamb
by whose blood we are saved, and in Easter we
celebrate the resurrection of Christ that brings
our freedom.

What's a Student Ministry with out a Ski Trip?
I recall telling our District Superintendent,
Bill Lovelace, that we were planning a Ski Trip
to the Carpathians for a winter retreat. His
reaction was, “Wow, you guys really are a
student ministry, huh!?” That’s right! Every
student ministry should have a winter retreat
involving skis. With Lviv being about 3 hours
north of the nearest Ukrainian Carpathian ski
village, we booked a three day-two night
adventure.

Betrayal and Belonging
Reading through the familiar story of the
Passion of Christ found in Matthew 26 and 27 is
a painful experience, as it is the story of
betrayal; betrayal by those closest to Jesus and
those who should have been close to Jesus. ...

Pilgrims in Ukraine: Campus ministry curiosity to many
In a city filled with Christians, Fred and Stacy
Vanderwerf still find themselves answering some
probing questions about what their United
Methodist campus ministry is doing in Lviv,
Ukraine.
While the questions may be tough, their answers
are simple and forthright: They are helping
students grow in faith and develop a deeper
relationship with Christ.
