One Great Hour of Sharing helps UMCOR change lives
The house on Little River Road is still on its
pad, unmoved by the water that rushed in from
two directions in a Bayou La Batre, Ala.,
neighborhood. The roof had been partially
dislodged by the high winds of Hurricane Katrina
that blew through this coastal town last August

Opening Your Doors Tips For Congregations That May Host Evacuees
Remember, It Takes a Community
Form a Committee
Before any decisions are made regarding hosting
evacuees, form a committee among interested
persons to work together. Hosting evacuees should
be a community effort. UMCOR does not recommend
individuals sponsoring evacuees. Evacuees belonged
to a community before Hurricane Katrina. Now, they
will need a new community to support them. .

UMCOR Offers Hospitality Guidelines for Hosting Evacuees
Hosting evacuees is a major decision that will
take the actions of communities working together,
say United Methodist Committee on Relief
officials, who today announced guidelines for
congregations seeking to host evacuees.
“Evacuees belonged to a community before Hurricane
Katrina. Now they will need a new community to
support them,” said Kristin L. Sachen, UMCOR’s
emergency services office executive. Rev. Sachen
said the first step is forming a team, because
“hosting evacuees should be a community effort.”

Gulf Coast Residents Clean-Up after Dennis While Keeping Watch for Hurricane Emily
This week as residents of the Florida Panhandle
and Alabama clean up after Hurricane Dennis’
high winds and rains, others inland sweep water
out of flooded homes, hoping to dry out before
the next storm arrives.
Tensions are high as communities, already
battered by last summer’s fierce hurricanes,
endured Dennis and now brace for Hurricane
Emily, a category 2 storm that recently passed
through the Windward Islands.

Hurricane Dennis Pounds the Gulf Coast and Floods Inland Areas
The devastation wrought by Hurricane Dennis
added insult to injury for many Gulf Coast
residents still recovering from Hurricane Ivan
last September. Dennis followed much the same
path as Ivan, striking homes left roofless 10
months ago. Representatives of the United
Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) are
working in affected areas to assess damage and
meet immediate needs.

UMCOR Supports Tsunami’s “Hidden” Emergencies
Fishing gear in Somalia, home repairs in India,
and school buildings in Thailand are three
examples of aid United Methodists are providing
in tsunami-damaged areas—but often unnoticed by
international media.
This work is being done by the United Methodist
Committee on Relief (UMCOR) in collaboration
with ecumenical partners that are able to
deliver long-term relief and rehabilitation
services.

Tsunami Recovery in Indonesia Reveals Resilient Human Spirit
The ornate handle shaped like an elephant's
trunk stood out among the debris scattered
around Banda Aceh. It looked like it broke off
of a pottery vase or pitcher. In comparison to
the other items in the rubble, a visitor could
tell that this once belonged to something
special. The handle caught the eye of an UMCOR
official visiting Indonesia in April. She
reflected how this piece of pottery echoes what
the tsunami did in many areas: it took something
beautiful and cherished, and left brokenness.
