Celebrating the Sacred: Mother's Day and Native American Sunday
At this time of year, Ms. Josephine Deere's
phone at the Oklahoma Indian Missionary
Conference
starts ringing off the hook as United Methodists
call, asking her to refer worship leaders to
celebrate Native American Ministries Sunday. The
giving on this Special Sunday undergirds Native
American networks and scholars within the United
Methodist connection.

Native American Ministries Sunday: Your Offerings at Work!
My name is Anita Phillips and I want to share
how
Native American Ministries Sunday and the
special
offering received on this Sunday has helped on
so
many levels within my own life and within the
Native American community. Creator God has moved
within my life in many ways. One has been a
special stirring of my spirit by the Holy Spirit
when I need to venture beyond my home community
and step into formal seminary education.

Native American Ministries Sunday
In 1988, the General Conference established
Native American Awareness Sunday to remind the
church of the gifts and contributions made by
Native Americans to this denomination and to
society. Celebrated on the third Sunday after
Easter (or any date local churches choose), in
2000 its name changed to Native American
Ministries Sunday.

United Methodist Blackfeet Parish Going Strong in Its 124th Year of Ministry
The name of the Apistoodooke United Methodist
Church in Heart Butte, Montana, comes from the
Blackfeet word for “creator.” This congregation
is one of three that make up the United
Methodist
Parish on the Blackfeet Reservation in
northwestern corner of the state. The other two
churches are in Browning and Babb. All are warm
and welcoming centers of praise to God and
service to people.

Reflections on Organ Donation
The human body is an amazing structure. Just
when we think we have learnt everything there is
to know about it a fresh new discovery comes
along that catches everyone by surprise. And
then there is the brain, that intricate computer
which no one has fully understood. We take our
bodies for granted but as St. Paul wrote in
1Corinthians 6:19 “your body is the temple of
the Holy Spirit”. We have to treat it with
dignity, respect and love. We have
been “fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Native American Ministry Sunday 2005
How can I worship Jesus Christ as a Native
person? Is there a place for me as a Native
person in the United Methodist Church? Can I
bring my Native way into the Church? Is burning
sage or cedar in the church appropriate? What
is a Give Away? Are there hymns written in
Indian languages? These are examples of question
asked of me regarding Native Ministries.

significant boost. Areas of California burned in
2004 by wildfires are, in 2005, most vulnerable
to mudslides. If you're planning a mission trip,

coast in the United States, young United
Methodists have shown that humanitarian service
need not be the sole province of adults. Several
hundred Baghdad children have some new tools to
manage their often bewildering and sometimes
frightening world.
