Recovering the African American Heritage of The United Methodist Church
Persons of African descent were numerous and
visible in American Methodism when the church
was formally established 225 years ago. But
these facts were often glossed over in ensuing
years, especially in the early 19th century as
slavery became a major issue of conflict in
politics and religion.

Hallelujah Moment from Bok Chitto: A Family
"Would you be able to help us with some gas?"
asked a young Choctaw woman. "My mother has
terminal cancer and we need gasoline so we can
make several medical appointments over the next
week." She and her family had arrived for her
mother's appointment at Choctaw Health Services
(next door to our complex) and decided to seek
help.

Where Are My Eyes? Fourth Sunday in Lent, March 22, 2009
During their time wandering in the wilderness,
the people of Israel became dissatisfied with
God
and Moses (Numbers 21:4-9). Though they had been
rescued from slavery, were being fed manna and
protected, it was still not enough for them.

A Faith Partner Alcohol and Drug Team Ministry: One Congregation’s Approach to Substance Abuse
The number of our neighbors along North
Carolina's Outer Banks impacted by substance
abuse is mind-boggling, and Jesus calls us to
love our neighbors. Sometimes that love looks
tough and sometimes it looks compassionate, but
the love that we're trying to extend to our
community, whether it's tough or compassionate,
is always full of grace and hope.

Church Developers Explore United Methodist 'Myths'
The notion that The United Methodist Church is
dying has been repeated so often that it has
become a belief, when in fact it is a myth,
according to a church executive and author.
The reality is that the 11.5-million member
denomination is poised for hope, said the Rev.
Craig Miller to church leaders attending a
workshop about myths of The United Methodist
Church. The class was held during the 2008 United
Methodist School of Congregational Development.

Church? What Is Church?: "Wandering Generation" Looks for Connections
Orlando, FL, August 4, 2008--The fact that many
Americans have little idea what is meant
by "church" or what happens there was a recurrent
theme at the 2008 United Methodist School of
Congregational Development.
The point was underscored by sociological data
and pastoral experience, but more attention was
given to ways of responding creatively to the
situation than to decrying it.

ended up giving birth to her son with two

There is light at the end of the financial tunnel
for Red Bird Missionary Conference. Although the
conference has dug deeply into their reserves to
pay the salaries of local pastors, it has not
deterred them from looking outward and focusing
on how they themselves can participate in God's
mission to the world.

United Methodist Church Appoints Twenty-Two New Missionaries
Twenty-two new United Methodist missionaries
were
commissioned on March 11 to serve in churches,
hospitals, and community centers in ten
countries
and five states of the United States.
The new missionaries are lawyers, doctors,
pastors, and agriculturalists. They come from
places as diverse as Brazil, the Philippines,
Mexico, Zimbabwe, Missouri, and Michigan. They
fall into several categories of mission service
and form the largest group of United Methodist
missionaries commissioned at the same time in
the
last four years.

The Community Enabler Developer, Inc A Safe Place
"It is harder for the poor. The poor get
poorer….It's harder because there are more needs,
more diseases, more that have lost their jobs or
their homes. It's getting so that elderly people
on fixed incomes can hardly pay their bills.
Sometimes they have to decide whether to buy food
or their medicines," said Ms. Maudine Holloway,
executive director, Community Enabler Developer,

'I Am Not Alone' Lent 2008
As a deaconess candidate, I consider myself to be
a lifelong learner in theology and the ways of
The United Methodist Church. In fact, I just
recently completed the Old Testament and New
Testament courses this winter and walked away
from that experience understanding why people
refer to the Bible as "the living word."

Peace Conference: Where is the Church's Voice?
Seasoned peacemakers, social justice advocates
and seminary students spent three days at a peace
conference grappling with the question: "How can
The United Methodist Church find its voice in a
world of violence?"
The Rev. Peter Storey, a renowned peace advocate
and the former Methodist bishop of South Africa,
set the tone for the three-day gathering as he
welcomed 400 participants to "the conference of
impossible things."

hurricane recovery in Gulfport, MS this fall.
From October 19-23, 2007, twelve Martin Methodist
College students, three staff members, and three
members of Pulaski First United Methodist Church
in Pulaski, TN, helped roof, paint, and remove
debris in Gulfport and Wiggins, MS. As the trip
concluded, all eighteen volunteers worked through
torrential rains to finish their tasks.

Roofing in the Rain
My dad is a construction guru. He built our
family house. He's an amazing carpenter, turning
junk like old barn siding into beautiful
cabinets. He made a life-size Thomas the Tank
Engine for his grandkids, and even, laid all the
track and built a railroad crossing, complete
with flashing lights and ringing bells.

Red Bird’s Wings of Love
The Red Bird Valley, nestled in the Appalachian
mountains of southeastern Kentucky, is an
isolated area where three counties come together.
The area is underdeveloped, cut off from the
educational and medical services of the county
seats, with very few employment opportunities for
the people of Appalachia. In a region with very
little, The United Methodist Church is a presence
that has provided hope to a part of the country
that many have forgotten.
