Recovering the African American Heritage of The United Methodist Church
Persons of African descent were numerous and
visible in American Methodism when the church
was formally established 225 years ago. But
these facts were often glossed over in ensuing
years, especially in the early 19th century as
slavery became a major issue of conflict in
politics and religion.

The Bigger Picture
I'm an editor and word dithering is important to
me. I think we ought to take the time to get the
words right, because words should represent what
we really mean to say. We need to listen to each
other and change our minds every now and then
about the words we print in our books of
Resolutions and Discipline. I'm glad our
doctrines are living documents that stretch and
grow and change with the growing pains of our
church. But is a committee of 1000 members the
best way to get this done?

Missionaries Serve at General Conference
Missionaries made significant contributions to
the proceedings of the 2008 General Conference
serving as delegates, interpreters,
photographers, accompaniers, and witnesses.
Their
quiet labors, which took place in large part
behind the scenes, created bridges of
understanding between people, among delegations,
and across the boundaries of national borders
that separate people from one another.

'Faith...Just a Little Faith'
A few years ago a movie came out called The Sixth
Sense. I never saw the movie but we all know the
catch line "I see dead people." That alone was
enough to make me decide that I didn't want to
see the picture, it just seemed morbid. As I read
the Scriptures for today this phrase kept coming
back to me..."I see dead people."
