New York, New York, June 9, 2009--Six years after Brittany Brooks' father dropped her off at Pfeiffer University for her first year in college, he drove her back again last month. However, Ms. Brooks returned to the United Methodist University not to pick up her dorm- room keys but to give the keynote address for "Mission Awareness Week."

Bishop Paul Verryn heads the Central Methodist Mission in Johannesburg, South Africa. The church's Thirteen people still were waiting for court appearances as of Feb. 7, Bishop Paul Verryn told United Methodist News Service. Verryn had been to the court that day as another person was released on bail.

Grace Ndlovu with baby Thobani.  Thobani was orphaned, homeless, and desperately ill with tuberculosis of the stomach, and several HIV/AIDS-related opportunistic infections. When he was 18 months old, he weighed a mere ten pounds. His prognosis was not good.

The World Methodist Council has selected Durban, South Africa, as the location for the 2011 World Methodist Conference. The assembly convenes every five years to bring together members of the worldwide association of churches in the Methodist/Wesleyan tradition. It will meet the first week of August in 2011.

 Revival Happens

Pastor Romesh Modayil was the guest speaker for the revival at the Tongaat Methodist Church. It was something the Methodist church in Tongaat, South Africa had never really experienced. The church was filled each evening from brimful to overflowing for three hours of singing and praying, teaching and preaching!

Nicola Spencer (Little Rock, AK) in front with (left to right) Cristina Ramirez (Chicago, IL), Nichol Luebrun (Los Angeles, CA) and  Luke Sigmon (Oakland, CA). “It’s so cool to learn,” said 22-year old Nichol Luebrun who returned from Johannesburg, South Africa on January 4, 2007. Ms. Luebrun attended the pan-Methodist Global Young People’s Convocation from December 28, 2006 to January 1, 2007. Cristina Ramirez from Chicago, IL and Luke Sigmon from Oakland, CA were also among the hundreds who attended the global gathering. The three represented the group, “Just Us Youth,” a new part of the Community Developers Program at the General Board of Global Ministries.
