United Methodist Church Follows Jesus' Lead: Immigration Task Force Moves Ministry to the Borders
"Jesus learned new things when he went to the
border," said Rev. Edgar Avitia, who led the
worship in Florida for US-based missionaries of
The United Methodist Church. Jesus' continuing
education and migration to the border of Tyre and
Sidon in Matthew 15:21-28 spoke truth to
missionary Jim Perdue, who attended the
missionaries meeting on the heels of the
immigration task force meeting at the Church
Center of the United Nations (CCUN) in New York
from September 16 to 18, 2011.

Labor Day: Continuing Advocacy for Workers
Labor Day is not an excuse to buy items on
sale
at department stores.
Labor is a legacy of 19th-century US workers who
fought for and won legal guarantees for workers,
such as the garment workers who made (and make)
the clothes sold in the sales racks at department
stores.

Remembering a Peacemaker: Dan Terry (1946-2010)
I first met Dan Terry in 2004 in Afghanistan.
One day he offered to help me get to a meeting on
the other side of Kabul--by bicycle. We took a
"shortcut" up to a steep ridge, following a rocky
path where we had to push or carry our bicycles.
At the top, while I caught my breath and admired
the view, we encountered a family of returned
refugees. This steep ridge--far from roads, water,
and the city proper--was the only place this
family could find to live.

Young Adults Address Slavery, Human Trafficking
Washington, DC. (UMNS), June 20, 2008 - Early on
a typical summer morning, migrant farm workers
are awakened by the grinding sound of a truck
door sliding open.
Loaded into pickup trucks and driven to lush,
green tomato fields, the workers toil from dawn
to dusk in temperatures soaring into the 90s,
filling and emptying 32-pound buckets of
tomatoes.

Disability Awareness Sunday 2005
Disability Awareness Sunday is both a
celebration and a challenge. We celebrate the
lives and witness of those with disabilities who
contribute so much to our faith community. We
also open ourselves, our churches, and the
Church to the call to full inclusion and full
accessibility for those with any disability –
physical or mental. This is an opportunity to
raise awareness and to find solutions to the
physical, architectural, communication and
attitude barriers to those with disabilities.

Issues in Global Mission Policy and Practice
Every four years representatives of the global
United Methodist Church meet in a General
Conference to consider policies and program for
our denomination. For at least two decades, the
General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM)
prepared pre-General Conference “mission papers”
for distribution to delegates. This year we are
doing something different.

Toward Peace Reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North
Korea) has been at the center of the world
political scene since October 2000, when it
disclosed it was pursuing an active nuclear
weapons program. North Korea occupies a
strategic location in northeast Asia, bordering
China, South Korea, and Russia. The uncertain
political situation on the Korean peninsula
influences the future for all of the nations
involved in the region and has serious
international implications.

Action Alert: The Big Secret
A report by the Lawyers Committee for Human
rights has noted that “the right to have rights
is precious – and it is at risk in the United
States today.”[i] On October 26, 2001,
President Bush signed the USA PATRIOT Act
(“Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing
Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and
Obstruct Terrorism.”) This Act awarded the FBI
and CIA broad authority to wiretap phones,
monitor email and survey financial records, as
well as to deport or detain non-citizens
indefinitely.

Church's black caucus opposes war, calls for speedy end
The United Methodist Church's African-American
caucus is urging President Bush and the U.S.
Congress to bring the war in Iraq to a speedy
end and to pursue peace at all costs.
The Black Methodists for Church Renewal passed a
resolution April 4 opposing war and calling for
peace. The group, describing itself as "a
conscience for social justice," also expressed
support for the deployed troops. The statement
came during the caucus' April 2-5 annual

Social Principles spell out church's stand on war
As the United States begins military action
against Iraq, many United Methodists are
wondering where their denomination stands on the
issue of war.
The United Methodist Church believes war is
incompatible with the teachings of Christ and
urges the peaceful settlement of disputes among
nations, according to the Book of Resolutions
and the Book of Discipline. However, the church
acknowledges that when peaceful alternatives
have failed, armed force may be necessary.
