arrow icon. A Mission of Solidarity: Adam Shaw in the Philippines
Adam marches in protest of the big mining industry.

Under a hot and humid December sky, 800 Filipino protesters were marching. Some farmed rice paddies for a living, some fished, and some scraped by in the big cities. Others represented churches, nongovernmental organizations, and political parties. Children and old women walked side by side. But one protestor was conspicuously different from the rest. Not only did he stand head and shoulders above his companions--he had white skin and auburn hair.

United Methodist Church Follows Jesus’ Lead

"Jesus learned new things when he went to the border," said Rev. Edgar Avitia, who led the worship in Florida for US-based missionaries of The United Methodist Church. Jesus' continuing education and migration to the border of Tyre and Sidon in Matthew 15:21-28 spoke truth to missionary Jim Perdue, who attended the missionaries meeting on the heels of the immigration task force meeting at the Church Center of the United Nations (CCUN) in New York from September 16 to 18, 2011.

Bethany Amey was commissioned as a US-2 in October 2009.

Although I have been struggling to find community here in San Francisco, I believe that I am turning a new corner. I've been visiting a few local churches recently to see where I would "fit in." For me, church here is definitely different from church at home, where my dad is pastor. But in such periods of uncertainty, there are also blossoms of growth.

arrow icon. Land Ownership: A Lesson from the Landless
A farmer displays the fruit of his labors on a farm in the northern Philippine island of Luzon, where United Methodist-supported Harris Memorial College had trained rural residents in improved farming techniques and water management.

There have been two major concepts of land ownership in the world: private and communal. The Christian concept of communal ownership in the Book of Acts--the communion of saints--is voluntary, not compulsory, as in Communism. But the most widely accepted concept is private ownership, in which individuals own the means of production. Its roots are in dominium, a concept of ownership deriving from Roman law, in which individuals have absolute, unrestricted control over property.

Blue Jay calling, Northern End of Lake George, Ticonderoga, NY.

God's creation is in crisis. We, the Bishops of The United Methodist Church, cannot remain silent while God's people and God's planet suffer. This beautiful natural world is a loving gift from God, the Creator of all things seen and unseen. God has entrusted its care to all of us, but we have turned our backs on God and on our responsibilities.

Protesters ask for the release of Dr. Montes and 42 other medical caregivers who were arrested while attending a Community Medicine Development Foundation (COMMED) training seminar. As young men, Dr. Alexis Montes and the Rev. Leo Soriano worked together to provide health care in rural areas of the Philippines. Soriano would go on to become a United Methodist bishop. Montes continued his work in community- based health care up until Feb. 6, when he and 42 other health workers were arrested by the government on charges of being communist insurgents.

Maxary Bourdeau, Louis Mercier Lamusique, Antoine Marie Amos, and Jules Daniel Josée were students in Haiti when the January earthquake hit.

New York, NY, April 19, 2010--Karen Viveros dreamed of becoming a doctor, but how? She grew up in a single-parent household in Nemby, a poor neighborhood in Paraguay. There was, however, a bright light in what otherwise seemed dim future prospects: her local Methodist church, where she became a youth leader at age 12.
