September 2009 'Discernment Event' Planned to Assist Laity in Finding God's Will for Their Lives
New York, New York, May 15, 2009--The
word "discern" means to recognize or identify.
Discerning the will of God for life is a
necessary responsibility of every Christian.
United Methodist laity--women and men--seeking to
discern God's will for their futures will have
that opportunity in mid September, 2009.

The Wounded Healer: Good Friday: April 10, 2009
The Lenten season's remembrance of the
crucifixion and resurrection are the essence of
the Christian faith. For me, this time also
represents the culmination of a life fulfilled
in
mission, reaching out to all humanity with a
love
beyond ourselves, and working for justice.
The ministry of Jesus Christ was and is an
incarnational ministry--a mission where content
meets context. We have a God who became human
and
experienced the good and bad of humanity; the
joys and temptations of the world; compassion;
agony; and death.

A Methodist Legacy in Akwesasne
Angie King has lived on the Akwesasne Reservation
all her life, as did her parents, and their
parents, and as far back as anyone can remember.
When asked how many of her eight children, 28
grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren still
live on the reservation, Angie smiled and
answered, "All of them."

Mary's Cradle: Advent Reflection on Ministry in Appalachia Third Sunday of Advent, December 14, 2008
The phone call from the physical therapist came
hours before we were scheduled to open. She
wanted to refer a grandmother who was caring for
three special-needs grandsons under the age of
four. Before I could finish with the case worker,
my other line rang and it was the grandmother,
searching for shoes and blankets for "her boys."

Deaf Ministries Have a Heart
New York, NY, August 21, 2008--In American Sign
Language, the sign for Methodist is the same as
the sign for enthusiasm. This is historically
appropriate, and many United Methodists today
are
excited about deaf ministries and communicating
through sign language. One place of such
enthusiasm is the General Board of Global
Ministries.

Turning the World Upside Down Through Living Justice
In the theater of life, are we protagonists? Or
are we spectators?
This question was asked of the diverse group
attending the Living Justice seminar, a five-day
immersion experience offered by the Office of
Deaconess and Home Missioner. The 12 young women
and one man came from a variety of life
experiences and hometowns to question themselves
and one another at the Church Center for the
United Nations in New York City. The overall
topic, "Poverty: Community, Life and Land,"
focused on how poverty and land rights are
connected.
