I recently saw the new movie, "The Wrestler." In the movie, Mickey Rourke stars as Randy "The Ram" Robinson, a professional wrestler who was very successful and popular in the 1980s but whose glory days are now long gone. Randy seems to be unable to imagine a different kind of life for himself, and so he continues to wrestle, trying to live the kind of life he lived as a celebrity.

The top court of The United Methodist Church has ruled that the denomination's legislative body would need to enact enabling legislation in 2012 to change the church's structure in the United States. The Judicial Council, in its first meeting since the election of five new members last spring, also remanded two cases on key issues—church membership and same-gender marriages—back to their respective conferences, citing an absence of official documentation needed to decide the cases.

Birthed in Water, Shaped in Song

The theme of the third Academy of Global Song on October 25-27 will be "Birthed in Water, Shaped in Song." Since the beginnings of the Christian church, music has been a powerful instrument for expression, proclamation, and transformation of the faith. Throughout the ages, the Church has been both shaped and characterized by what it sings: from hymns and refrains found in the Bible, to plainchant, the sacred polyphony of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the Lutheran Chorale, the Genevan Psalter, Victorian and gospel hymns, and contemporary Christian music.

One of the themes for this week is God’s lavish love: a constant, persistent, and inexhaustible love that desires, searches, and joyously celebrates our return whenever we have strayed or wandered away. During our times of being lost, the knowledge that this abundant love is seeking us and ready to welcome us back can be a great source of comfort and hope.

The Rev. Namsoon Kang has a different take on the popular phrase, "Think globally, act locally." "What you do here cannot be separated from what they do out there. Everything is so connected."
