 World Student Christian Federation

WSCF Executive Committee meeting in Porto Alegre, Brazil, February 2006. After a 20-year hiatus, the North American office of the World Student Christian Federation (WSCF) has reopened its doors. The WSCF, a global student ecumenical organization founded in 1895 by US Methodist and Nobel Peace Prize winner John R. Mott, has long been an important organization in the ecumenical movement. However, its work in North America—and the United States in particular— has been hampered by the lack of a regional office. WSCF supporters hope that the new office, located in Toronto, will generate excitement and new opportunities.

The towers of a Hindu goddess temple stand out in the foothills of the Himalayas. Recently, I had the delightful experience of witnessing a dance drama titled “Shanti-duta Yesukrista” (Jesus Christ, Herald of Peace). The piece was choreographed by a Hindu, with dramatic lyrics in Kannada (a regional Indian language), and composed by a Muslim. Another Hindu directed this creative mingling of Indian classical and folk dance and music. In the program notes we read: “Shantiduta Yesukrista is a humble effort to narrate the story of Jesus Christ through classical and folk media that are indigenous to India.

In Greensboro, N.C., a group of Christian, Muslim and Jewish women meet on a regular basis to seek mutual understanding. In Rockford, Ill., a Rockford Urban Ministries' project encourages residents to attend open houses at places of worship for various faiths. Both projects are among those receiving funding from the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), which began its "Honoring Differences in the Midst of Hate and Violence" grant program as a response to September 11.

Greta Cofield. Hattie B.Cooper Community Center, MA. In times of difficulty as is currently being experienced throughout the country, it is important that children and young adults have safe havens and spaces of nurture and development. The General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church supports more than 100 national mission institutions across the country, many of which directly impact the lives of young people. The beauty of these programs is that beneficiaries often return as adults to serve. One such individual is Greta Cofield of Roxbury, Massachusetts. Her story follows:
