Immigration Concerns Build Bridges Among North American Methodists
Concern for people migrating across political
borders is motivating increasing mission
collaboration between the United Methodist Church
in the US and Methodist Church of Mexico.
Simultaneously, United Methodist general agencies
are stepping up their collective attention to US
immigration policy and legislation.

North American Reopening World Student Christian Federation
After a 20-year hiatus, the North American office
of the World Student Christian Federation (WSCF)
has reopened its doors. The WSCF, a global
student ecumenical organization founded in 1895
by US Methodist and Nobel Peace Prize winner John
R. Mott, has long been an important organization
in the ecumenical movement. However, its work in
North America—and the United States in particular—
has been hampered by the lack of a regional
office. WSCF supporters hope that the new office,
located in Toronto, will generate excitement and
new opportunities.

A Community of Communities: Living Together in Interfaith Community
Recently, I had the delightful experience of
witnessing a dance drama titled “Shanti-duta
Yesukrista” (Jesus Christ, Herald of Peace). The
piece was choreographed by a Hindu, with
dramatic lyrics in Kannada (a regional Indian
language), and composed by a Muslim. Another
Hindu directed this creative mingling of Indian
classical and folk dance and music. In the
program notes we read: “Shantiduta Yesukrista is
a humble effort to narrate the story of Jesus
Christ through classical and folk media that are
indigenous to India.

United Methodists Pursue Contact with Other Faiths Assisted by Grants from UMCOR
In Greensboro, N.C., a group of Christian,
Muslim and Jewish women meet on a regular basis
to seek mutual understanding. In Rockford, Ill.,
a Rockford Urban Ministries' project encourages
residents to attend open houses at places of
worship for various faiths. Both projects are
among those receiving funding from the United
Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), which
began its "Honoring Differences in the Midst of
Hate and Violence" grant program as a response to
September 11.

It Feels Good to Give Back
In times of difficulty as is currently being
experienced throughout the country, it is
important that children and young adults have
safe havens and spaces of nurture and
development. The General Board of Global
Ministries of the United Methodist Church
supports more than 100 national mission
institutions across the country, many of which
directly impact the lives of young people. The
beauty of these programs is that beneficiaries
often return as adults to serve. One such
individual is Greta Cofield of Roxbury,
Massachusetts. Her story follows:

Greetings for the Christmas Season from Red Bird Mission: "A Witness for Christ in the Heart of Appalachia"
Red Bird Mission is one of more than 100 national
mission institutions related to the United
Methodist Church through the General Board of
Global Ministries. A multi-faceted outreach
program of the Red Bird Missionary Conference, it
is located in Beverly, Kentucky and serves a
population where unemployment is at 50%; the high
school dropout rate is among the highest in the
nation; and more than a third of children live
below the poverty line. Fred Haggard, who serves
as executive director of Reb Bird offers thoughts
for the Christmas season.
