On the Violence Against Christians in Nigeria
Dear Friends,
Please join me in praying for our brothers and
sisters in Nigeria. In recent weeks, Christians
have been targeted and killed by Boko Haram, a
religious extremist group in northern Nigeria.
Hundreds more have fled the region in fear.
Societal, religious, and economic imbalance is
creating a volatile climate, despite calls for
peaceful resolutions.

Breaking the Cycle of Malaria and Poverty
Malaria kills. It kills a child every 30 seconds
in sub-Saharan Africa, and those that die are
disproportionately poor. The anopheles mosquito
that spreads this deadly, but preventable,
illness does not distinguish between rich and
poor. But the difference between life and death
often depends on one's environment and ability
to
get treatment very soon after falling ill.

My story starts with a cholera outbreak that
claimed nearly 100 lives in one of the villages
under our medical care. With poor roads and few
available vehicles, it is difficult to transport
patients 40 miles from the village to the
hospital in Zing.

Responsively Yours: Faithful Women Past and Present November Response Magazine
My grandmothers lived in Nebraska. One was a
pastor=s wife and the other a farmer=s wife. Both
were members of the Evangelical Church and active
in the Woman=s Missionary Society. The
Evangelical Church flowed through various mergers
and unions into The United Methodist Church. The
Woman=s Missionary Society is one of the
predecessor organizations of United Methodist
Women.

Number of Children Orphaned By AIDS Will Rise Dramatically
A major international report released on July
10 finds that an already grim global orphan
crisis is set to get much worse as more and more
adults with children die from AIDS, especially in
sub-Saharan Africa. The report, Children on the
Brink, contains the broadest and most
comprehensive statistics yet on the historical,
current and projected number of children orphaned
by HIV/AIDS. It finds more than 13.4 million
children have lost one or both parents to the
epidemic in the three regions studied, a number
that will increase to 25 million by 2010.

AIDS Epidemic Faster in Eastern Europe Than in Rest of the World: Epidemic Continues in Upswing, Even in High-Income Countries
The the number of HIV infections in Eastern
Europe is rising faster than anywhere else in the
world. Meantime, the epidemic continues its rapid
spread throughout Africa, with 3.4 million new
infections and 2.3 million deaths in 2001. In
Swaziland, Botswana and some areas of South
Africa, more than 30% of pregnant women are HIV-
positive. In West Africa, several countries with
previously low infection numbers- including
Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation- have now
passed the 5% infection mark.
