Go to San Francisco Libre, Nicaragua, on Lake
Managua. That's what Arlene Andrews, Stuart
Andrews, Katherine Hepfer, Rick Hepfer, Miriam
Freeman, and Rita Rhodes did from May 14 to 21,
2011. They were the team from several United

The Faces of Clean Water in Nicaragua
For untold years, women and children in Las
Mesas, Nicaragua, walked two miles each way to
get water. Grandmothers, mothers, and children
made this trip several times a day, every day--
walking in flimsy flip-flops across sharp rocks
and hard-baked soil. They were going to fetch 5-
gallon buckets of water, each filled bucket
weighing 40 pounds.

Inspiration from Nicaragua
Several years ago, I served as a Global
Justice Volunteer in Nicaragua. It remains one
of the most humbling experiences of my life. I
lived and worked for eight weeks with the people
of Alamikambang, Nicaragua, in what seemed to be
the middle of nowhere. As I reflect on this
verse, I am reminded of these inspiring people
who are faithful enough to cling to the love of
God in everything that they do.

Hallelujah Moment from Nicaragua Encountering God in the Midst of a Crisis
Each day I am challenged to live out my faith.
I arrived in Waspam, Nicaragua in October 2007,
about a month after Hurricane Felix hit. This
community of 6,000 people is on the Coco River,
which forms the border of southern Honduras and
northern Nicaragua. Most residents are Miskito,
an indigenous people who have populated the
region for centuries.

Insights Gained and Questions Raised: Global Justice Volunteers
"Do you have poverty like this in the United
States?" Angel, a young Nicaraguan man, asked
Nikki. They were walking through an area of
Nicaragua where children regularly drink murky
water. Nikki began to wonder about access to
clean water in the United States and in other
parts of the world.

The Practice of Justice and Mercy in Daily Life Global Justice Volunteers
“The Global Justice Volunteers format is designed
to be a life-transforming process, not just a
program with an ending point,” the Global Justice
Volunteers material reads. “The young adult
volunteer should carry the Global Justice
Volunteer experiences into his or her current and
future work.” For many young people who serve as
GJVs globally, the expectation to carry the
experience with them is not a choice. It is a
must.

Missionary Minute: Transfiguration Sunday /Last Sunday After the Epiphany February 26, 2006
Wilber Alvarado, 33, holds a chemistry degree. He
is active in his church, works with university
youth groups, directs a health-development
program in rural communities and reaches out to
gang youth in his barrio to offer an alternative
to street violence. He supports his younger
brothers and sisters. He drives a minivan,
transporting youth all over Nicaragua. Wilber is
a testimony to Christ’s love in the world and to
hope found through faith and action.

Literacy History and News from Nicaragua
In 2005 Nicaragua celebrated the 25th anniversary
of an historical event that caught the eye of the
world and earned a United Nations award. From
March to August of 1980, approximately 60,000
young people mobilized to the far reaches of
Nicaragua to share their basic skills in reading
and writing with campesino (poor farmer)
families. The illiteracy rate dropped from 60% to
12% in just six months

Long-term recovery from last season's four
consecutive hurricanes is quietly treading
forward. UMCOR provided a grant to help tackle
rural poverty in Zimbabwe through nutrition
programs, food distribution, and self-supporting
activities such as gardening. Hurricane Adrian
rolled through El Salvador and Honduras late last
week.
