Mission Initiatives: Starting New Churches Outside the US
One hundred six new congregations were started
outside the United States in 2009 through a
series of United Methodist Mission Initiatives
sponsored by the General Board of Global
Ministries. The 13 initiatives--ranging from
Mongolia to Honduras--are what Thomas Kemper,
the mission agency's new chief executive,
calls "front-line efforts" in pursuit of the
denomination's goal of "making disciples of
Jesus Christ for the transformation of the
world."

Single-Heartedness: First Sunday of Lent, February 21, 2010
Absolute single-hearted service…how does one
do that? What would that look like? Some saintly
person unengaged with this world's temptations
and relationships that snarl much of God's
creation into an unrecognizable mess? What does
single-hearted service mean to me? How do I not
become distracted from my intentions?

Hallelujah Moment from Nepal: "The Church on the Rock"
February 20, 2009--As the faltering economy
grips even the remotest parts of the earth,
Nepal does not emerge unscathed. Politically,
socially and economically, life is unstable.
Even the ability to have a work day often
revolves around the presence or absence of
electricity. Crime has risen, the inflation rate
is soaring, and it seems there is no solution in
sight.

Hallelujah Moment from Nepal: On Becoming the Talk of the Community
Through narrow dark streets we pressed on from

feeling more like the front row of a rock

God's Enabling—and Prayer
I have left Tansen and will be traveling home
(Philippines). I am ready to move on to another
chapter of life. My second term as a missionary
general surgeon in Tansen Hospital is finished.
Thank you very much for all your prayers. I
couldn’t have lasted 5 1/2 years if you had not
stood by me, or better put, knelt with me.

Missionary Minute: July 9, 2006
The choir was singing “Here I Am, Lord” when I
responded to God’s call on my life to become a
missionary. I answered, “I will go,” and little
did I realize how many people it would affect. I
thought I had been called personally and it would
involve only me. How wrong I was!

Missionary Minute: Easter Vigil April 15, 2006
Being a missionary surgeon is difficult. You’re
not practicing your profession for yourself, but
you reflect somebody else. If I have a private
practice, my motivation is to do a really good
job so patients will refer more patients and I
will earn more money and maybe become rich and
famous. Being a missionary doctor means if I do
something wrong, that reflects on my God. If I do
something good, that, too, reflects on my God. So
that is much harder!

Certainty amidst Uncertainty
I waited patiently for the Lord;
He turned to me and heard my cry.

He set my feet on a rock and gave me

When He Was in the Desert
In 1991, a few years after I’d started working
at Patan Hospital, I met the most memorable
patient of my medical career. Most of my
patients have been Nepali, and quite a few of
them have remarkable stories themselves. James
was an Australian medical student who’d come to
Kathmandu to do his senior year 2-month elective
placement.
