Scholarships from Mission Agency Prepare a New Generation of Leaders
New York, NY, April 19, 2010--Karen Viveros
dreamed of becoming a doctor, but how? She grew
up in a single-parent household in Nemby, a poor
neighborhood in Paraguay. There was, however, a
bright light in what otherwise seemed dim future
prospects: her local Methodist church, where she
became a youth leader at age 12.

Women's Division and United Methodist Women Face The Challenges at General Conference
The challenge was two-fold for United Methodist
Women and the Women’s Division at the General
Conference of The United Methodist Church.
First, the Division brought several petitions
around women’s and children’s issues before the
legislative body with the hope of action and
support from the denomination. Second, the work
of United Methodist Women and the Women’s
Division as a lay women’s organization with
separate funds and members was at risk as
opponents tried to make changes to organizational
structures and funding in subtle ways.

Recent Decision Shows Lack of Support for Human Rights, says United Methodist Women
Leaders of the 1-million member United Methodist
Women advocated for a ban on trade with Burma -
also known as Myanmar -- for several years.
Last
June, they thought their advocacy on behalf of
Burma’s enslaved was a success when President
Bush signed a ban on trade with Burma into law.

As the Olympics Approach, Women Concerned with the Indignity Exemplified
Those who carry the International Olympic torch
exemplify the dignity,
strength and perseverance of humankind.
Ironically, the torchbearers for
the Salt Lake City-based Olympics will be
wearing
uniforms that exemplify
the opposite of these. The Economic Justice
office of the Women's Division of The United
Methodist
Church signed on to two letters this week with
the Free Burma Coalition and
other organizations concerned with human rights
in Burma (Myanmar).
