Advent Wreath Lighting Liturgy 2011
Advent is the season in the Christian year when
we hear and participate in the time of waiting for
the birth of the Messiah. We look with
thankfulness and hope for the second coming of
Christ. We hear the voice of God in Scripture. We
hear the voices of God's people around the earth
as we pray together for the joy and peace of
Christ's love to warm the hearts and lives of all
humankind.

Singing the Church Together: Yo sé que estás aquí
Have you ever heard a song and thought, "I'd
love my choir to learn that song?" Bill Rose,
Director of Music at St. Luke-Simpson United
Methodist Church, Lake Charles, Louisiana, was
participating in a Global Praise reading session
when he had that thought. After a discussion
with Global Praise staff, he decided to arrange
the song "Yo sé que estás aquí" [#2, Global
Praise 3, ©2004, GBGMusik] for his choir.

Singing the World Together: Pakistan
From late July through early August 2010,
heavier than usual monsoon rains drenched
Pakistan. These heavy rains provoked flash
floods that have taken the lives of at least
1,200 Pakistanis. The rains have chased millions
from their homes and left thousands stranded and
awaiting rescue. As we respond to the disaster
through our gifts to UMCOR, we also pray for the
communities impacted by these floods.

More than a Thousand Sing: French and English Cameroonian Hymnbook Released
This month, the more than 1,000 United
Methodists of the Cameroon mission have one more
reason to celebrate, praise, and sing--the
release of the hymnbook, O for a Thousand
Tongues to Sing/Mille Voix Pour Chanter Tes
Louanges. This useful and creative hymnal was
made, printed, and published by and for
Cameroonian United Methodist worshipers. The
hymnal contains hundreds of hymns, some from the
African and Wesleyan traditions, some in French
and English.

Jezu de Nazaret: Singing the Church Together
We are often asked how Global Praise collects
the songs of the world. Sometimes they are
literally "under our nose." In this case, we
discovered "Jezu de Nazaret" in the offices of
the Church Center for the United Nations (CCUN.)
Jorge Lockward, Director of Global Praise, was
meeting with several colleagues as a part of
planning for a Global Ministries staff worship
service focused on praying for Haiti.

WARNING! Don't Call It a "Music Camp!"
Every church musician wants to involve more
children in their ministry. We find it hard to
believe someone wouldn't want to be in choir.
Sometimes it is the fear of doing something
different that keeps a child from saying, "I
want to join choir."

Alive Forevermore: Ash Wednesday, February 17, 2010
"Alive, alive, alive forevermore! My Jesus is
alive, alive forevermore." Each night I sit in
my living room and listen to my 2 ½-year-old
nephew sing this song at the top of his lungs.
He has lived with me for 15 months now and has
taught me so much about what it means to have
childlike faith.

Listen Carefully
When I hear Mary's song, I hear the voice of
Glenda singing by the river. Keeping rhythm with
her busy hands, she washes her family's clothes,
taking this opportunity for an expression of
praise: "One day at a time sweet Jesus, that's
all I'm asking of you…"

He Never Gives Up: Passion/Palm Sunday, April 5, 2009
A few weeks ago during lunchtime, my husband and
I heard what sounded like a marching band. We
literally jumped to our feet and ran to the
compound fence, and there indeed was a band of
twelve men and one woman playing trumpets,
saxophones, tubas, and drums as they walked down
the dusty dirt road. Behind them were two groups
of traditionally dressed dancers moving to the
beat of the music. In seven years of serving at
Maua Methodist Hospital in Maua, Kenya, we had
never seen or heard a band.
