In Samara, Russia, Michael watched a grandmother and her grandson carry a suitcase together as they boarded a train. Michael had an epiphany: If these two family members of such different ages and abilities could carry such a heavy weight, which neither could lift alone, perhaps the church family too could carry one another's weight.

To admit (and live in the knowledge) that we don't fit in the brokenness of the present is to acknowledge that we are longing and looking for the coming Kingdom. Admitting that we don't fit is uncomfortable, painful, and difficult. It means letting go and recognizing what keeps us in chains. But it is also freeing.

These trends may seem forward-looking, yet the changing tides of missionary service refer back to the past and to the life of Jesus Christ.

After reviewing the facts, I had been able to determine that she was eligible for citizenship. They came to thank us because she received her naturalization certificate. She is still in grade school but old enough to realize the importance of that piece of paper.

In “The Servant Song,” Richard Gillard writes: “Brother, let me serve you, let me be as Christ to you; pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too.” There is no doubt in my mind that being in mission is not about a special place of assignment but, rather, about an awareness of the opportunities to witness to God’s love through our lives—wherever we are—and to receive in those situations.
