Understanding the Turmoil in North Africa and the Middle East
In the Middle East and North Africa, millions
of men and women, young and old, Muslims and
Christians, rich and poor, have recently hit the
streets to call on their leaders to step down and
demand the end of corrupt regimes. President Zine
El Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia was the first head
of state to go.

Where Will Our Help Come From? Lent 2008
I live in a place that knows how to ask the
question: "Where will our help come from?"
The voice that sings the 121st song is not
foreign to Palestine or to Palestinians. Living
here, working and speaking each day with
Palestinian Christians, I hear in almost ever
word the question: "Where will our help come
from?"

Mission Study on "Israel-Palestine" Is Consistent with United Methodist Policy
A comprehensive 1996 statement on Christian-Jewish
relations by The United Methodist Church's
legislating General Conference strongly reiterated
the denomination's opposition to all forms of
anti-Semitism. Four years later, the quadrennial
General Conference, which is the only entity that
speaks for the whole church, urged United
Methodists to observe Yom HaShoah, the annual
Holocaust Memorial Day, and also addressed
Israeli-Palestinian relations in the Middle East.

Mission Agency Takes No Position on Financial Divestment in Israel
New York, NY, August 17, 2007 -- The General
Board of Global Ministries has taken no position
on financial divestment in Israel. The
international mission agency is not submitting a
resolution to The United Methodist Church's
highest legislative body supporting divestment in
companies doing business in Israel as a protest
to Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

Seeking Justice and Peace Through Visits to the Holy Land
For centuries, Christians have traveled to the
Holy Land on pilgrimages. Yet too many such tours
go only to ancient biblical sites and never meet
with the living Palestinian Christian communities
of today.

Providing the Balance
This year the geographic mission study for the
Schools of Christian Mission will be
Israel/Palestine. This Middle Eastern conflict is
an issue that never seems to go away because it
never gets resolved. The region has been in
conflict my whole life, so in some ways, I don't
expect it to be resolved. But then, ...

Gaza: A Lost Jewel
Along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea
lies a small, sandy piece of land known as the
Gaza Strip. Conveniently located at the juncture
of the major trade routes passing from the warm
southern climes of Africa, the exotic spice
countries of Asia, and the commercial centers of
Europe, for thousands of years the area of Gaza
had been a major trade center.

Unheard Voices
Hardly any one heard him cry and I was the only
one that watched the tears flow down his cheeks.
He came to my office to seek help, but his
problem was too enormous for a simple clergyman
like me to solve. He is a Palestinian citizen of
Bethlehem who once had a small piece of land near
Rachel's Tomb.

A Blessing in the Midst of the Earth
The stories the Bible contains have helped
peoples find strength, consolation, freedom,
justice, mercy, love, and salvation. The Bible
has been a part of proclaiming release to the
captives, recovery of sight to the blind, and
setting the oppressed free (Isaiah 61:1a, Luke
4:18b).

Arabic-language 'Upper Room' Editor Criticizes Mideast Policy
U.S. policies in the Middle East would change if
the Christian church, a "sleeping giant," would
speak out in a loud voice against injustice and
violence.
That opinion was expressed with strong emotion
Aug. 16 by the Rev. Albert Isteero, a longtime
Christian leader from the Middle East, who spoke
at the weekly worship service at the Upper Room
Chapel. He also described the challenges that
Christians face in Muslim countries.

Bishop Praises President Bush for Role in Mideast Cease-fire
The president of the United Methodist Council of
Bishops has written a letter to U.S. President
George W. Bush, praising him for his leadership
in bringing about a cease-fire between Israel and
the Hezbollah militant group.
"Thank you for your leadership in the United
Nations adopting the resolution which has served
as the basis for the cease fire in Lebanon and
Israel," wrote Bishop Janice Riggle Huie. "We are
grateful that you have worked to lay the
foundation for further negotiations to bring long-
term stability to the region."
