Surplus funds and money from the sale of livestock have kept this outreach program alive over the last few months so that the GYTTE staff could continue to serve the rural poor of south-central Mexico, but those funds are now depleted. Well Construction/Simple well construction to provide water for the community. Over the past 30 years, the GYTTE program has trained and equipped tens of thousands of people to take care of their own needs and also serve others. In 2007, approximately 15,000 people were empowered to move from subsistence living to lives of dignity through training events, learning experiences, and community activities.

Twenty-Two New Missionaries

Twenty-two new United Methodist missionaries, 12 new deaconesses and two home missionaries were commissioned on March 11. On far left, Bishop Joel N. Martinez of San Antonio, president of the General Board of Global Ministries, and, far right, Bishop Felton E. May, interim general secretary of the agency. Twenty-two new United Methodist missionaries were commissioned on March 11 to serve in churches, hospitals, and community centers in ten countries and five states of the United States. The new missionaries are lawyers, doctors, pastors, and agriculturalists. They come from places as diverse as Brazil, the Philippines, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Missouri, and Michigan. They fall into several categories of mission service and form the largest group of United Methodist missionaries commissioned at the same time in the last four years.

Church member Elvira Arellano received sanctuary at Adalberto United Methodist Church in Chicago from Aug. 15, 2006, to Aug. 16, 2007. Flor Crisóstomo, 28, says she is "picking up the torch" from Elvira Arelleno, another congregation member who lived in the church for a year before leaving last August. Arelleno was arrested and deported within days of leaving Chicago and arriving in Los Angeles, where she had planned to speak out for compassionate immigration reform.

My name is Felix Angel Méndez, and I am a probationary pastor in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, assigned to a shelter that houses persons who have been deported from the United States. They can stay here while they find work to earn enough money to return to their homes in Guadalajara, Michiocan, or other parts of Mexico. Most of them are here three or four weeks.

I haven’t always been a United Methodist. When I was 18, I attended a Methodist church in Mexico and decided to accept God’s grace. I felt secure knowing God was in my life. My response to God’s call to ordination was a gradual process that began with an indigenous child with whom I tried to minister.
