I sent Patrick Friday an email, suggesting that we meet for breakfast in the cafeteria for a conversation about social media and mission. Patrick suggested, instead, we should chat, pray, and invite others to join us at a Google+ "hang out." A couple of emails later, Patrick and I logged on to Google+ for our "hang out," a four-way videoconference with Patti Bacher in De Pere, Wisconsin, and Mi Rhang Baek in Madison, Alabama.

The red ribbon and globe are symbols of UNAID's World AIDS Campaign. "The famine in southern Africa brings the world face-to-face with the deep and devastating impact of AIDS," said Dr Peter Piot, Executive Director of UNAIDS. "What we are seeing today in a number of countries of sub-Saharan Africa is an HIV epidemic that is overwhelming the coping resources of entire communities. We must act now, on a much larger scale than anything we have done before, not only to assist those nations already hard-hit, but also to stop the explosive growth of AIDS in the parts of the world where the epidemic is newly emerging."

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Faith, Southern Africa is on the verge of a severe famine. The pictures we are familiar with from famines past have not made their way onto our television screens, newspapers, and internet newsites. The food shortage in Southern Africa is not getting the media coverage a disaster of this proportion calls for. The United Nations World Food Program reports 7.7 million people in Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe require immediate food assistance. People are facing starvation in Angola and Namibia as well.

Randolph Nugent, chief executive of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries, requested the appeal based on advice from UMCOR staff.

Jacob Mtsunji shows how poor the corn crop in Malawi is this year.

More than 300 people have starved to death in Malawi's central and northern regions because of a famine that has been described as the worst in the last 50 years, according to reports from the country. Malawi is the worst hit by the crisis, with women and children in rural areas suffering the most. The villagers are eating wild seeds as a supplement to their diminishing stock of maize.
