In Mission Together Uses New Media to Connect People
I sent Patrick Friday an email, suggesting
that
we meet for breakfast in the cafeteria for a
conversation about social media and mission.
Patrick suggested, instead, we should chat, pray,
and invite others to join us at a Google+ "hang
out."
A couple of emails later, Patrick and I logged on
to Google+ for our "hang out," a four-way
videoconference with Patti Bacher in De Pere,
Wisconsin, and Mi Rhang Baek in Madison,
Alabama.

Nashville to Malawi: An Expanding Mission Partnership
The hymn says, blessed be the tie that binds,
but ties in Christian mission can also expand.
Growing stronger is perhaps the best way to
describe a mission partnership between a United
Methodist congregation in Nashville, Tennessee,
and the denomination’s Malawi Missionary
Conference in central Africa.

Eight New Jersey communities are mopping up after
two days of heavy rains. UMCOR is seeking
energetic volunteers to assemble flood buckets.
More than a million people have fled their homes
in the Darfur region of Sudan. Southern and
Western African families face severe food
shortages. Some 23,000 people occupy Soul Clinic
in Liberia, a camp for displaced persons managed
by UMCOR.

UMCOR urgently seeks contributions for the most
vulnerable Southern African families facing

Impact Of AIDS Worsens African Famine
"The famine in southern Africa brings the world
face-to-face with the deep and devastating impact
of AIDS," said Dr Peter Piot, Executive Director
of UNAIDS. "What we are seeing today in a number
of countries of sub-Saharan Africa is an HIV
epidemic that is overwhelming the coping
resources of entire communities. We must act now,
on a much larger scale than anything we have done
before, not only to assist those nations already
hard-hit, but also to stop the explosive growth
of AIDS in the parts of the world where the
epidemic is newly emerging."

Overview of Food Crisis in Southern Africa
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has
described the food crisis in southern Africa as
the most severe and urgent dilemma facing the
international community at the moment. The food
shortage is a complex crisis with a different
situation in each country. The overview below
summarized the current situation in those
countries where ACT members have started programs
to assist people in this crisis.

Churchwide Appeal for Southern Africa Famine
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Faith, Southern
Africa is on the verge of a severe famine. The
pictures we are familiar with from famines past
have not made their way onto our television
screens, newspapers, and internet newsites. The
food shortage in Southern Africa is not getting
the media coverage a disaster of this proportion
calls for. The United Nations World Food Program
reports 7.7 million people in Lesotho, Malawi,
Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe
require immediate food assistance. People are
facing starvation in Angola and Namibia as well.

United Methodists Make Churchwide Appeal for African Famine
Noting the potential for mass starvation, the
United Methodist Council of Bishops has issued a
churchwide appeal to fight famine in Southern
Africa. Funds will be directed to the United
Methodist Committee on Relief's African Famine
and Relief Advance #101250-4 and used to support
United Methodist and ecumenical work in the
region. The Rev. Randolph Nugent, chief executive
of the United Methodist Board of Global
Ministries, requested the appeal based on advice
from UMCOR staff.

Malawian Villagers Are Eating Wild Seeds: Famine in Africa (UMCOR)
More than 300 people have starved to death in
Malawi's central and northern regions because of
a famine that has been described as the worst in
the last 50 years, according to reports from the
country. Malawi is the worst hit by the crisis,
with women and children in rural areas suffering
the most. The villagers are eating wild seeds as
a supplement to their diminishing stock of maize.
