Bishop Roy Sano is a retired bishop
and a member of the Council of Bishops of The United Methodist Church.

Microfinance was one of the ways to address the needs of those living in poverty at a conversation on ministry with the poor sponsored by the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries on December 16. Held in New York City at the United Methodist Church of the Village, more than 500 people joined in from around the world via a live webcast. New York, NY, May 1, 2009--Scholarships totaling $1,348,321 for advanced and college- level study in the 2009-2010 academic year were approved on April 29 by directors of the General Board of Global Ministries, meeting in Stamford, Connecticut.

In June 2005, Global Ministry’s United Methodist Development Fund (UMDF) provided financing so the congregation of the First Samoan United Methodist Church (UMC) in Anchorage, Alaska could purchase their first church building.  Asian/Pacific Islanders are the second largest and fastest growing racial group in Anchorage. In 2003, Samoans held the distinction of being the fastest growing group in the area. Therefore, this facility was vital in providing the Samoans with a place to gather, and worship.

 Improving Opportunities forYouth in Armenia

In 1997, the Armenia office of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) established the Sustainable Guaranteed Agricultural Assistance for Women (AREGAK) program to give women the opportunity to take out small loans to establish or grow small businesses. The goal of the program is for women to increase their families’ incomes and well- being by selling goods.

Microenterprise programs are “programs extending small loans, and other financial services such as savings to very poor people for self-employment projects that generate income…” Please urge your Senators to protect funding for mircoenterprise programs.

Fifteen months ago, church attendance at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in New Orleans, Louisiana, numbered 70 people. Today, 280 to 300 people come to worship. There are 555 members. However, Pastor Joe Connelly, whose arrival sparked this growth, sees more significant ways of measuring a church's success than its numbers—ways that are manifest in music, liturgy, and ministry. By focusing on the gospels, the community, the worship, and the spiritual life of parishioners, the church has grown.
