How the First Samoan UMC in Anchorage Came To Be Built
In June 2005, Global Ministry’s United Methodist
Development Fund (UMDF) provided financing so the
congregation of the First Samoan United Methodist
Church (UMC) in Anchorage, Alaska could purchase
their first church building.
Asian/Pacific Islanders are the second largest
and fastest growing racial group in Anchorage. In
2003, Samoans held the distinction of being the
fastest growing group in the area. Therefore,
this facility was vital in providing the Samoans
with a place to gather, and worship.

Urgent Action Needed to Fund Microenterprise Programs
Currently the United States Senate is deciding on the
FY2006 Foreign Operations bill which will also include
funding for microenterprise programs. Microenterprise
programs are “programs extending small loans, and
other financial services such as savings to very poor
people for self-employment projects that generate
income…” Please urge your Senators to protect
funding for mircoenterprise programs.

Fair Trade Versus Free Trade --UMW Action Alert
The gap between developed countries and
developing countries still remains very large.
Inequalities in trade practices are hurting
developing countries. Despite the growth in
free
trade agreements, “low income countries account
for more than 40% of the population, but less
than 3% of the world trade.” There are
solutions to these inequalities.

Keeping the Faith—A Louisiana Church Grows
Fifteen months ago, church attendance at
Cornerstone United Methodist Church in New
Orleans, Louisiana, numbered 70 people. Today,
280 to 300 people come to worship. There are 555
members. However, Pastor Joe Connelly, whose
arrival sparked this growth, sees more
significant ways of measuring a church's success
than its numbers—ways that are manifest in music,
liturgy, and ministry. By focusing on the
gospels, the community, the worship, and the
spiritual life of parishioners, the church has
grown.
