At the Boys' Prison in Kaunas, Lithuania, a program of gift-giving from Father Christmas and words from a pastor that God has not given up on them.

Kaunas, Lithuania, December 15, 2009--We arrived at the Boys' Prison in Kaunas, Lithuania, late in the afternoon. It was the season of Advent, a week before Christmas. We checked through security, showing our passports, giving pertinent information, and then we were locked inside.

Professor Meeli Tankler, new president of the Baltic Methodist Theological Seminary, was the unanimous choice of the board of trustees and of the Estonia Annual Conference.

Tallinn, Estonia--The 15th anniversary of the largest United Methodist theological seminary in Europe was marked by the installation of a new president and an espiscopal address linking the role of theological schools to the practice of Christian mission.

Gražina Bielousova on the day of her commissioning. November 14, 2008--A huge smile appeared on the face of Gražina Bielousova as she received bouquet after bouquet of flowers in honor of her commissioning as a Probationary Elder. Gražina became the sixth Lithuanian indigenous and the second woman pastor in a country where a short time ago there were none.

 "Why are you here?"

Jonas with his beloved wife, Regina. "Andrius" sat alone Sunday after Sunday, praying for his wife, praying that she would one day come and sit beside him. He prayed that they might worship God together in the Panevezys United Methodist Church in Lithuania.

arrow icon. Proposal for Latvia, Lithuania Conference Advances 
Fargo Hosts greet Baltic Visitors at the Latvia-Lithuania Initiative in Fargo, ND, April, 2007. A new provisional United Methodist conference for Latvia and Lithuania is expected to be considered by General Conference when the denomination's top legislative body meets in 2008. Lithuanian United Methodists approved the proposal at their annual conference in April, and their counterparts in Latvia are expected to do the same in August, according to Bishop Oystein Olsen, who leads the church's Nordic and Baltic Area.

We finally have streetlights on our street! Kaunas, with 415,000 people, is the second- largest city in Lithuania. It shares many of the safety concerns of other large cities. In the winter, days are short, with sunrise at about 8:30 a.m. and sunset around 4 p.m., so streetlights are a welcome addition.

Missionary Commissioning as part of GBGM Board Meeting, October 2005, Stamford, CT. fb The United Methodist Church commissioned 11 new missionaries in the chapel of the Church Center for the United Nations on the night of October 11. A cool rain fell outside but the chapel was filled with the warmth and light of Christian witness and service.

Almost 100 youth leaders from six countries in the United Methodist Church's Northern European Area gathered for the first time for a weekend of fellowship and training. "This is a historic gathering," said Bishop Øystein Olsen, at the opening of the Nov. 11-14 conference. "This is the first time something like this has been arranged for the Nordic and Baltic states together."

The knitting group of the Taurage UMC show their products. Diana   is second from right. As the United Methodist Men of Geneva United Methodist Church began chopping green peppers, jalapeños, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions, their conversations turned to their friends in Taurage, Lithuania. They hoped the Super Bowl sub sale the next day would not only satisfy hungers in Geneva, Illinois, but also raise money for the soup kitchen of their partner congregation in Lithuania.

Keith Turman is a missionary of many talents!  He has been training to run the Stockholm marathon on June 5, 2004.  He has a goal of raising $1000 per mile in an effort to help Taurage UMC here in Lithuania build a new church.  That is a total of $26,200.  Here is a picture of him in training. For the Rev. Keith Turman, running is a pleasure, not just a way to keep fit. But the United Methodist missionary, based in Lithuania, has chosen to make his first marathon more than just an enjoyable race past the Swedish Royal Palace and Houses of Parliament in central Stockholm.
