The Word that Breaks our Codes Christmas Day, December 25, 2008
I grew up in the US speaking English. At 56, I’ve
now also been speaking Spanish for the past 20
years. I still find it magical. It isn’t that I
believe what my Spanish teacher said about
Spanish being God’s language. Nor does it feel
magical because I learned to speak it as if by
magic. I did not.

The Presence of Grace and Peace Christmas Eve, December 24, 2008
A man sat on a log at the edge of the washed-out
hillside.
A few hours earlier, heavy rains on the
deforested hilltop had become a tidal wave of
mud
washing everything in its path into the river
below. Hundreds of houses were lost. No one knew
how many people had escaped and how many were
buried in the mud.

God Sang: A Christmas Meditation from Latin America First Sunday of Christmas, December 28, 2008
On November 15, 2008, God sang in Costa Rica. God
sang because more than 40 women from 11 countries
in Latin America and the Caribbean were loudly
rejoicing for what they've learned, shared and
lived during a most amazing week together at the
Universidad Bíblica Latinoamericana (Latin
America Biblical University), an ecumenical
institution.

Hallelujah Moment from Nicaragua Encountering God in the Midst of a Crisis
Each day I am challenged to live out my faith.
I arrived in Waspam, Nicaragua in October 2007,
about a month after Hurricane Felix hit. This
community of 6,000 people is on the Coco River,
which forms the border of southern Honduras and
northern Nicaragua. Most residents are Miskito,
an indigenous people who have populated the
region for centuries.

Hallelujah Moment from Chile: Terremoto!
We lost power. Then I heard it—that rumbling
that comes as the earth begins to split and
move…"terremoto," as we say in Spanish. People
were running, moms rushing to a nearby school to
retrieve their children--fear driving them on.

Gospel Seeds & Mission Harvests
The sowing of the gospel in the hearts and minds
of the Latino peoples has born bountiful fruit
that will nourish the future church in the
Western Hemisphere. The mission witness of the
British Methodists in the Caribbean and of the
United Methodists throughout the Latin American
and Caribbean region, as well as parts of the
United States, has been faithful to Wesley’s
vision of the whole world as one parish.

Committee Examines Ties with Latin American/Caribbean Methodists
United Methodists need to have stronger
connections with independent Methodist churches
in Latin America and the Caribbean.
That’s the premise underlying a special committee
created by the 2004 United Methodist General
Conference to study the denomination’s
relationship with autonomous churches in the
region. Bishop Minerva Carcaño of Phoenix is the
committee chairperson.

Hispanic/Latino Ministry Missionaries Change Expectations

teaches church leaders about the National Plan
for Hispanic/Latino Ministry in the Oregon-Idaho
conference. Ms. Harkness notes that many people
are surprised when she, a non-Hispanic, shows up
at a church meeting to lead the workshop. "They
aren't expecting me," she laughs.

The National Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry Enhances Many Communities
Edgar Avitia sees a shift in understanding the
National Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry in
The United Methodist Church. Rather than
focusing on Hispanics as a single minority
group, the plan embraces and broadens the
ministry to a wide spectrum of heritages,
cultures, and language communities, including
the non-Hispanic/Latino communities.

UMCOR Hotline, June 21, 2005
Civil unrest in Haiti has led United Methodist
Volunteers in Mission to cancel all summer mission
trips to Haiti. Heavy spring rains in the Highwood
Mountains of north-central Montana destroyed
bridges in the area. Northern Chile was rocked by
a powerful earthquake last week. Food shortages
from the lack of rain, locust infestations, and a
breakdown of civil infrastructures are causing
famines in southern, western, and eastern African
nations.
