Early Korean Methodist Mission Leader Remembered at World Mission Conference
Edinburgh, Scotland, June 9, 2010--The 2010
World Mission Conference in Edinburgh recognized
a direct descendent of the only Korean
participant, who was Methodist, at a landmark
missionary conference a hundred years ago.

Prayers for Korean Mission Volunteers Held in Afghanistan
The directors and staff of the United Methodist
General Board of Global Ministries are in fervent
prayer for the safety and quick release of the
group of Korean Christian volunteers being held
by the Taliban in the Qarabagh District in
Afghanistan. We are also remembering the family
and the congregation of the Rev. Bae Hyung-kyu, a
young Presbyterian pastor from Bundang, who has
already been shot by the captors.

Pastoral Letter on Campus Shootings from United Methodist Korean American Group
We are deeply saddened and grieved by the tragedy
at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg
on Monday, April 16th. We express our deepest
sympathy and condolences to the victims and their
families as they mourn and grieve the loss of
their loved ones. We join together in praying for
those killed and wounded, their families, the
community at Virginia Tech and all those affected
by this deadly rampage.

Mission Leader Sees Hope in Six-Party Agreement on North Korea Nuclear Issue
The United Methodist Church’s chief mission
executive is hopeful that a new six-party
agreement will not only lead to a phase out of
North Korea’s nuclear weapons program but also
open the door to talks on a permanent peace for
the Korean peninsula.

Methodists From Around World Gather Amid Global Tensions
Drawing representatives from churches in 132
countries, the World Methodist Council met July
18-19, followed by the July 20-24 World
Methodist Conference. "God in Christ
Reconciling" (II Corinthians 5:18) is the theme
for the 19th conference, which is meeting at
Seoul's Kum Nan Church for worship, dialogue and
study. Conference participants come during a
time of high tension following North Korea's
recent missile tests.

Korean Methodists Up by $100,000 Their Gift To Rebuild US Churches Downed by Hurricanes
The Rev. R. Randy Day, chief executive of the
General Board of Global Ministries, announced
the gift at a meeting of the Connectional Table
of his denomination at Lake Junaluska.
He said that Bishop Kyoung-Ha Kim, president of
the council of bishops of the Korean
denomination, made a commitment of $100,000 in
new money in a letter dated October 25.

Worldwide Methodist community responds to relief effort
Louisiana native and United Methodist News
Service reporter Kathy Gilbert was on assignment
in Liberia when Hurricane Katrina struck the
Gulf Coast. Upon learning where she was from,
the children of Reeves Memorial United Methodist
Church in Monrovia presented Gilbert with a $20
donation "to help the children of Louisiana."

Methodists of Korea Send $55,000 for Hurricane Katrina Relief
The Korean Methodist Church has given $50,000 to
the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)
for use in the areas devastated by Hurricane
Katrina. Methodist women in Korea sent $5,000
more to assist women and children affected by
the storm.
