Lent as a Journey
Jesus is almost always on the road in the New
Testament Gospels, first traveling around
Galilee, preaching, healing, and teaching his
disciples the lessons of faith; then in Matthew,
Mark, and Luke, he makes a prolonged journey to
Jerusalem.

Mission Thoughts for Epiphany
The Gospel of Matthew steadily moves the
story of Jesus' ministry and his meaning to the
world from a tribal context--the ancestry of
Abraham in chapter one--to a universal
perspective, that of making disciples of all
people in chapter 28.

"Honey, Jesus Is at the Door Again"
Jesus keeps showing up at our back door
unannounced in the form of a 4'9" Mayan woman
with no front teeth. Jesus is going by the name
Isabel and has a deviously cute baby named Norma
slung over his back. You wouldn't believe how
loud Jesus knocks and how persistent he can be
with the door. The man, will simply not go away!
Let me be perfectly honest with you...Jesus is
really starting to tick me off!

Addiction and Recovery: A Process Towards Sanctification
As I stood before the bishop of the Virginia
Conference of The United Methodist Church at my
ordination as an Elder, I heard him ask: "Do you
expect to go on to perfection in this life?"
Little did I know that this question would
emerge as a central motif for my pastoral
practice with those suffering from addictions
and working through recovery in medical and
mental health settings.

toys that just get dusty? Maybe God wants our
