Concerning Immigrants "My Church Has Taught Me"
Milan, Italy, March 30, 2010--For nearly a
decade, the small Protestant community in Italy
has been assisting immigrant brothers and
sisters from all over the world. The Chiesa
Evangelica Metodista di Milano, to which I
belong, is a testimony of this phenomenon.

Hallelujah Moment from Italy: "Peace and Possibilities"
January 9, 2009--“Cosa?!” [What?!] “Che e
successo!?” [What happened?!] One of the
teenagers from Ghana got a call on his cellphone
on the way home from a church confirmation trip.
His 19-year-old friend, Abdul, had been killed
in Milan. Over the course of several phone calls
and articles in the morning’s paper, the details
began to emerge.

Hallelujah Moment From Italy Who's at the Table?
Potlucks can take on many forms. In some parts of
Indiana in the United States, they're
called "pitch-ins"; in many European Methodist
churches, "bring and share." The Italian
Protestants call such a meal "agape."

Globalization and the Church: An Italian Methodist Perspective
An Ecuadorian teenager sporting a Denver Nuggets
cap shares a Turkish kebab with his Italian
girlfriend. Technicians from India operate the
service center for a German cell-phone company
based in Italy. These are some of the faces of
economic globalization in Milan, Italy. But
globalization has other faces here, too: a young
Filipino woman carrying two heavy bags of
groceries in one hand while supporting an elderly
Italian woman with the other ...

Ecumenism in Milano
The Rev. David A. Markay and his wife Rev.
Kristin C. Markay serve as pastors of the multi-
cultural, English-language ministry of the Chiesa
Metodista di Milano (The Methodist Church of
Milan) in Italy. This ministry is an outgrowth of
the Italian Methodist/Waldensian Church's
missional emphasis of "Offering hospitality to
the stranger/Being the church together." This is
an excerpt from their recent newsletter.

Crossing the Aisle
Once a month the Italian and English-speaking
communities worship together. Bi-lingual
worship, we are discovering, is not a precise
science. Long explanations, puzzled looks, and
clapping out of rhythm are all part of an
awkward courtship.

Mission Evangelism Leader to Sing In Vatican Opera Dedicated to Pope
The Rev. Dr. ST Kimbrough, a mission evangelism
leader of The United Methodist Church, is
singing at the Vatican on April 8 in an opera
performance dedicated to Pope John Paul II,
whose funeral was held earlier in the day.
The opera is “I Am the Way,” written by
the late Metropolitan Opera singer Jerome Hines.
Kimbrough will reprise the role of Peter, which
he sang when the opera was recorded some years
ago by the Radio Luxembourg Symphony Orchestra.
The performance is the first of the opera at the
Vatican.

Mission Leader Pays Tribute to Pope John Paul II as Champion of Peace
The Rev. R. Randy Day paid tribute to Pope John
Paul II, as “a powerful champion of peace
between and within nations” and a steadfast
opponent of the death penalty.
The 84-year-old pontiff, Day said, “was
consistent throughout his long papacy in the
promotion of non-violent solutions to disputes
large and small, and he was unswerving in his
opposition to the menace of nuclear weapons.”

All are Welcome to this Lord's Supper
One tram and one subway ride from the Methodist
Church of Milano is the Chiesa della Santa Maria
delle Grazie, the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s,
The Last Supper. Painted some 500 years ago,
the artist offered his vision of the Holy
Thursday meal. Leonardo’s use of lines and
angles draws onlookers into the scene. Recently
restored colors make the disciples’ faces, the
glasses on the table, and the bread on the
plates seem almost real.

Being the Church Together
The Revs. Kristin and David Markay are
missionaries with the General Board of Global
Ministries. In August 2004, the Markay family
moved to Italy, where Kristin and David have
been asked to serve as pastors to the English-
speaking community of the Chiesa Evangelica
Metodista di Milano. This ministry is an
outgrowth of the Italian Methodist/Waldensian
Church's missional emphasis of "offering
hospitality to the stranger," which in the case
of the congregation in Milano is the largest
immigrant community from Africa, Asia, and
Eastern Europe.

European Methodists find common ground at festival
At first glance, it may be hard to imagine that
European Methodists have met together in large
numbers only twice: once during the Cold War and
then again this summer. But considering
everything that has conspired to keep them
apart - differences in language, history,
culture, church structure and geography, and
even politically fraught visa application
processes - one begins to appreciate what an
achievement the July 30-Aug. 3 European
Methodist Festival really is.

United Methodist bishop takes hope for peace to Rome
When United Methodist Bishop William Boyd Grove
visited Rome recently, a number of Italians
asked him if he thought a U.S.-led war against
Iraq could be averted.
He gave the same answer to each question: "My
political hope is small, my gospel hope is
large."
