Fatima Al-Dalo, a 62-year old breast cancer patient, prays in her bed in the oncology ward of the Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

Gaza is like a prison in many ways, surrounded by high walls on three sides. Gun towers oversee the free-fire stretch of scorched earth and rubble, warning anyone--including farmers who once tilled the land--against getting close. On the fourth side, the west, the Mediterranean inexorably draws the eye to the horizon; but it, too, is forbidden.

Bishop Minerva Carcano hugs Elva Michal at the Community Developers' Let's Get Radical event.

"Radical means go back to the roots. That means dig deeper," said Dr. Siosaia Tuitahi of the Pacific Islander National Caucus of The United Methodist Church (PINCUM). "Your story, my story, will become deeper if we connect to the original story. Never forget. After all, it's not our story. It's God's story that we will continue to tell. Jeremiah said, 'If you are rooted in the Almighty, you will be like the plant by the river. Your leaves will always be green…. And blessed are those who are rooted in Christ Jesus.'"

 (Revised June 2008)

Chief executives of the Women's Division and the General Board of Global Ministries called the 2007-2008 Israel-Palestine mission study consistent with the denomination's stand for a just and lasting peace in that region in a joint statement issued Feb. 19 (updated in June, 2008). Women's Division Deputy General Secretary Harriett Jane Olson and Global Ministries' Interim General Secretary Bishop Felton E. May issued the statement in response to attacks on the study launched after a denominational briefing for delegates to the 2008 General Conference.

Lent 2008

I live in a place that knows how to ask the question: "Where will our help come from?" The voice that sings the 121st song is not foreign to Palestine or to Palestinians. Living here, working and speaking each day with Palestinian Christians, I hear in almost ever word the question: "Where will our help come from?"

A comprehensive 1996 statement on Christian-Jewish relations by The United Methodist Church's legislating General Conference strongly reiterated the denomination's opposition to all forms of anti-Semitism. Four years later, the quadrennial General Conference, which is the only entity that speaks for the whole church, urged United Methodists to observe Yom HaShoah, the annual Holocaust Memorial Day, and also addressed Israeli-Palestinian relations in the Middle East.

Palestinian children take circuitous routes around Israeli checkpoints to get to school each day. For centuries, Christians have traveled to the Holy Land on pilgrimages. Yet too many such tours go only to ancient biblical sites and never meet with the living Palestinian Christian communities of today.

Fishermen pull nets on the Mediterranean seashore, Gaza City. Along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea lies a small, sandy piece of land known as the Gaza Strip. Conveniently located at the juncture of the major trade routes passing from the warm southern climes of Africa, the exotic spice countries of Asia, and the commercial centers of Europe, for thousands of years the area of Gaza had been a major trade center.

A once-bustling street in the ancient city of Hebron in the southern part of the West Bank, where 400 Israeli settlers intimidated and violently attacked Palestinian shopkeeters to drive them from the center of the city. Hardly any one heard him cry and I was the only one that watched the tears flow down his cheeks. He came to my office to seek help, but his problem was too enormous for a simple clergyman like me to solve. He is a Palestinian citizen of Bethlehem who once had a small piece of land near Rachel's Tomb.

A man plays with his children in the Palestinian Beach Refugee Camp, Gaza. The stories the Bible contains have helped peoples find strength, consolation, freedom, justice, mercy, love, and salvation. The Bible has been a part of proclaiming release to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind, and setting the oppressed free (Isaiah 61:1a, Luke 4:18b).
