Pitching Peace Like a Tent in Belfast
The East Belfast Mission is pitching its tent.
The community center, Skainos, an ancient Greek
word meaning tent, is being built by
missionaries,
staff, volunteers, and community members of
Ballymacarret in Northern Ireland. All people
will
be welcome in this East Belfast building which
will offer space for outreach groups and
individuals seeking healing and transformation.

Hallelujah Moment from East Belfast "She began to dream dreams."
Two years ago, Jade walked with her head down and
never made eye contact with anyone. Quiet and
very shy, she had low self-esteem and no
ambitions. Slowly, as Jade was warmly welcomed
into our dance group at East Belfast Mission and
her one-to-one relationships grew, her confidence
increased.

Peaceful images replace violent themes on Belfast murals
For years, it has been almost impossible to get
to a worship service at the East Belfast
Mission, attend a seniors lunch or go to a youth
group meeting without confronting images of
violence and terror.
They are literally painted on the walls.
Paramilitary murals, as they are called, can
cover the whole side of a house and often pay
tribute to those who have used guns and bombs to
make their opinions heard during 30 years of
violence between Catholic and Protestant.

In Belfast, Methodists see regeneration as key to peace
Down the road from the East Belfast Mission is
Harland and Wolff, the shipbuilders famous for
building the Titanic.
The yard once employed more than 30,000 from
East Belfast's neighborhoods. Now, barely a
hundred workers are left. It is just one reason
this working class Protestant community is said
to be the fifth from the bottom in terms of the
worst places to live in Northern Ireland. Three
decades of sectarian violence during Northern
Ireland's "Troubles" have not helped.

European Methodists find common ground at festival
At first glance, it may be hard to imagine that
European Methodists have met together in large
numbers only twice: once during the Cold War and
then again this summer. But considering
everything that has conspired to keep them
apart - differences in language, history,
culture, church structure and geography, and
even politically fraught visa application
processes - one begins to appreciate what an
achievement the July 30-Aug. 3 European
Methodist Festival really is.

Elementary school becomes sectarian battleground
The air horns and whistles began to blare just
beyond the wall of tanks and British soldiers
blockading the street. A mother tending a small
toddler in a stroller visibly flinched and
quickly made the sign of the cross. Another woman
covered her ears and grimaced.
