Global Ministries Reflection and Prayer on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11
This coming Saturday will mark 10 years of the
September 11, 2001 attacks. The reactions that
followed this event radically changed our world
and the context of Mission. As we take time
together to reflect and pray we are mindful of
other instances of violence, including the recent
shootings in Norway and all the places and people
in the world who suffer violence in this very hour.

When Celebrating Jesus Is Not Easy
Public celebration of Christmas--public
testament of faith in Jesus Christ--is not
always easy, or even safe. As we move into a new
year, my prayer list includes persons and
situations in which Christian brothers and
sisters lost their lives in recent days because
of their faith, or where a public official was
killed for trying to protect religious rights of
Christians.

Council of Bishops: Resolution on the War on Iraq
Whereas, the prophet Micah reminds us that God calls nations to
"beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears to pruning
hooks," and that nations will no longer "lift up sword against
nation, and neither shall they learn war anymore" (Micah 4:3)

Women's Division staff and Directors stop for a moment of silence in solidarity with Cindy Sheehan
On Friday, August 19, 2005, 50 directors and staff of the
Women's Division — joined by members of the community —
stood on a main street in Stamford, Conn., at a noon break from
their National and International Committee meetings. In
solidarity with the mothers of fallen soldiers camped outside
President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Tex., the demonstrators
prayed for peace, for fallen military and their families, and for all
victims of the Iraq war.

UMCOR Readies Start-up Operations in Sri Lanka, Indonesia
Guy Hovey was in Sarajevo, Bosnia, during the
siege of that city, and he witnessed in Northern
Iraq how Saddam Hussein's efforts at ethnic
cleansing wiped away entire villages. But Hovey -
who directs operations for Europe and Asia for
the United Methodist Committee on Relief - was
unprepared for the magnitude of the devastation
he found in Sri Lanka after the Dec. 26 tsunami.

Iraq: Where Hopes and Fears Meet
At this time of year, children around the world
are making their wish lists for the gifts they
hope to receive. Some hope for toys or a bike or
video games. But for some children in Iraq,
living amid war and violence, their hopes stem
from greater needs and worries about their future.

parcels, hygiene kits and other forms of
assistance. Talks are under way to set up a
regular flow of Medicine Boxes to Ganta Hospital.

UMCOR Hotline, August 3, 2004
Christian and Muslim leaders have denounced the
deadly attacks on five Iraqi churches. Vast areas
of several regions of India are under water. The
worst monsoon floods since 1998 have deluged
Bangladesh. The crisis in Sudan is the world's
worst humanitarian disaster. A foot of rain in
Texas, a tornado in Pennsylvania, failed dams in
New Jersey, flash floods in Arkansas-- these are
the storms of summer 2004.

Bishops call for U.N. role in Iraq, decry violence
The United Methodist Church's bishops are urging
the U.S. government to request help from the
United Nations in establishing a transitional
government in Iraq.
In a May 11 resolution, the Council of Bishops
said it "laments the continued warfare by the
United States and coalition forces" in Iraq,
noting that the cycle of violence has led to
the "denigration of human dignity and gross
violations of human rights of Iraqi prisoners of
war."

Church Members Ask for Peace, Prayers and Action in Iraq
Bishops of the United Methodist Church planned to
share their perspectives and the fact that the
Church has been faithful in its belief that war
is incompatible with Christian teachings. Bishop
Ives of the West Virginia conference, one of the
coordinators of a planned media event around the
Iraq war, said that it was distressing that
bishops could not share personal stories about
the conflict with the media. The event was
canceled because of the pressing General
Conference concerns that left delegates without
the scheduled lunch break.

bishop of Liberia reports that the people from
the Voinjama District are ready to return and to
