150 Years of the Methodist Recorder
When the first edition of the weekly
Methodist Recorder and General Christian
Chronicle appeared in 1861, Queen Victoria was
on the British throne, railway mania was in full
swing, Charles Dickens was writing Great
Expectations, and Abraham Lincoln had just been
elected President of the United States.

Above, Through, In: Our Deep Connection
Our desire to connect with family and friends
reaches a peak during Advent and the holiday
season. Few people want to be alone on Christmas
and New Year's Eve, and many feel distant from
God.

Advent Reflection: The Gifts and Challenges of the Connected Life
The time of Advent reminds me to wait, wait,
wait. Yet my social-media habit encourages me to
hurry, hurry, hurry. This December I've found
these modes--of waiting and of hurrying--are at
odds. While I am happy to be connected to so
many friends and family through social media, I
fear my round-the-clock digital connectedness is
distracting me from a deeper relationship with
the people in my life and with God.

Vera's Notebook
At age 60, I met and fell in love with the
internet. One of my first discoveries was that
United Methodist churches could apply for free
web space on the General Board of Global
Ministries' website. I decided that our church
should have a webpage.

The Changing Landscape of Mission
Not long ago, I participated in a training event
in Uganda. Participants in the training came
together from five different countries in East
Africa. I have stayed in touch with a few of
them;
we share pictures, audio recordings of the
training sessions, video, and links to news
stories via email discussing events in our
respective countries.

Bombing in Vieques: a Legacy of Exploitation
'Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall learn war any more' Micah 4:3" ">
The crystal waters off Vieques Island are
shockingly blue, and the verdant landscape is
continuously caressed by the ocean breezes.
Known as “La Isla Nena” (the Little Island),
Vieques is home to about 9,000 permanent
residents and serves as a playground for
beachcombers from the main island of Puerto
Rico and around the world.
The island is also the place where the U.S. Navy
has conducted bombing exercises for the past 60
years - a fact that residents say has harmed
their environment, their economy, their health
and their quality of life.
