A grant from the Global AIDS Fund helped to provide 10 bicycles to St. Paul's Anglican Children Project in Chipata, Zambia, for caregivers making home visits to people living with HIV/AIDS.

HIV/AIDS affects people in all nations at all strata of society. Thanks to the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund, United Methodists and their partners can fight this disease in various countries through church, community, and hospital-based projects.

The recent tragedy in Mumbai is personal to me. I started out my pastoral ministry in South Mumbai, the part of the city that was under siege. I was appointed to serve as the senior pastor of the Bowen Memorial Methodist Church, located right behind the Taj Hotel. My wife, Glory, and I have eaten in Leopold Restaurant, another site of massacre.

Meagan Malone, Katie Collins, and Luke Darby with pre-schoolers at the Bartimai Centre for the Blind in India. In January 2007, Rev. Don Fortenberry read about the Bartimai Centre for the Blind on the Global Ministries web page (www.gbgm-umc.org). Inspired, Rev. Fortenberry, Minister for Student Missions, sent Millsaps College students, Meagan Malone, Katie Collins, and Luke Darby, to work at Bartimai Centre with blind pre-schoolers for three weeks in the Spring.

Dinesh, a 28-year old rickshaw driver, married with two children, was living a normal life when one day he experienced severe pains in his back and chest. He went to the Dharmsinh Desai Memorial Methodist Heart Institute (DDMM) in Nadiad, a city in the state of Gujarat, India and discovered that he was suffering from a dissecting aneurysm of the aorta which resulted in the separation of the layers of the aorta in his chest. His high blood pressure had triggered this condition. The only option left for him was to undergo an open heart surgery.

Global Ministries director Patricia M. Weeks cuts the ribbon for the exhibit of the history and ministries of the Methodist Church in India on the occasion of the celebration of 150 years of Methodism in India.  (Celebration was held at the Isabella Thoburn College in Lucknow, India). Compassionate ministry and Mother Teresa are almost synonymous in the context of India. People from all over the world who visit the centers she established in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) are profoundly moved by her work among orphans, the physically challenged, and the dying.

This procession on the campus of Isabella Thoburn College in Lucknow celebrated the Methodist Church's ministry in India. Nearly 700 Indians and dignitaries from other nations celebrated 150 years of ministry in this South Asian nation. Meeting Oct. 20-23 at Isabella Thoburn College, delegates from the 12 regional conferences of the Indian church and Methodist leaders from other nations celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Methodist Church of India, a 649,000-member autonomous denomination affiliated with The United Methodist Church.

arrow icon. Several Avenues to Earthquake Relief in Kashmir and Northern Pakistan 
A girl carries water at CWS-sponsored Camp Maira in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan. On October 8, 2005, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck the mountainous region of Kashmir, a disputed territory claimed by Pakistan and India. In Pakistan alone, 4 million people suffered some consequence of the quake and as of November 8, the death toll was more than 87,000. In the months that followed, United Methodists gave almost $2 million to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) for earthquake relief in the region.

 Christian Medical College Answers the Call

Members of the Christian Medical College and Hospital team attend to the medical needs of Jabla, a resident of Guhalan Village in the mountains of Kashmir, where 90 percent of the houses were destroyed by the 7.6 magnitude earthquake. On October 20, 2005, 10 volunteers from Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) in Ludhiana, India, were chosen to embark on a special mission— to provide medical relief to the Kashmir State ravaged by the earthquake that rocked the entire region on October 8, 2005.

The general and geographic studies are produced by the Communications Office of the General Board of Global Ministries in tandem with the spiritual growth study produced by the Women’s Division.
